The Spring 2023 Denim Trend You Need Based On Your Personality Type

New and fun trends abound this spring (like TikTok sheer tops, balletcore, and glorious pops of color), but denim… Denim is its own whole thing. And though it never really left, we can still – very accurately – say that denim is back, and is truly better than ever.

As a self-proclaimed lover of le comfies (a.k.a. all sweats everything), jeans have admittedly played second fiddle in my OOTD wardrobe in the past. Who would choose coarse, constricting denim over infinite softness and stretch? Not this self-actualized WFH-wear acolyte. Well, hold the yoga pants, fellow loungewear queens, because life as we know it is about to change – for the better. With the abundance of genuinely spectacular (and comfy!) denim trends for spring, comfy fashion lovers the world over are feeling a definite change in the wind.

At the same time, as with most style evolutions, change can bring hazards of its own. With the plethora of denim trends to choose from this spring, it can be hard to know which style is right for you. And because your denim personality can make or break your whole vibe, getting it right is important. Should you don a pair of spring-approved wide-leg jeans? Stick with the tried and true straight-leg variety? Branch out and try something totally new? Never fear, fashion fiends, because we’re detailing the top five denim styles for spring, and breaking down which personality type each style is best for, so you can feel comfortable in your own skin – and look 10/10 amazing – all season long.

1. Baggy/Wide-Leg Jeans

The sweatpants of jeans. Baggy, or wide-leg, jeans have been going strong for a few seasons now, and are, fortunately, here to stay. Which is good news for all you laid-back cool girls, à la Elsa Hosk and Michelle Lin, because this style fits you like a proportionally-generous glove. Comfy and forgiving, with plenty of room for movement, this style is as close to loungewear as you’ll get out of denim. And we really couldn’t ask for more. Pair it with a button-down like Swedish beauty Hosk, or a cropped tee and oversized trench for Lin’s casual private investigator look, and you’re guaranteed an air of “I love you and don’t care if you say it back” chillness that transcends trend – which is perfect for your imminent cool girl spring debut.

Reformation Cary High Rise Slouchy Wide Leg Jeans, $148

ASOS DESIGN Dad Jean, $46

2. Straight-Leg Jeans

Amour pour toujours (our forever love). Is there anything more classically feminine, or more French, than a perfectly-fitting, uber-flattering straight-leg jean? We say, non. Much to our delight, this style remains a wardrobe staple this spring, and is perfect for feminine Francophiles like Parisian it-girl Marielle Haon and Sydney-based Petra Mackova. A wardrobe classique for feminine French fashion lovers, it’s like the baguette of jeans, and is equally as satisfying. If you’re a lover of denim mode française, the straight-leg trend is for vous – and may you wear it as proudly as Petra Mackova’s legs are long.

Abercrombie Ultra High Rise 90s Straight Jean, $90

We the Free Pacifica Straight-Leg Jeans, $78

Agolde Lana Straight Jeans, $188

Reformation Cynthia High Rise Straight Jeans, $148

3. Flare Jeans

Party girls be like. If the flare jean isn’t the veritable life of the spring trend party, I don’t even know what kind of party we’re at. Seen here on the lovely IG Julies (Leasy in Paris and Julie Ferreri), the flare jean is the party girl of the group chat, and is as exuberant as a freshly-metamorphosized butterfly in a field of wildflowers. Always instigating a late night dance-off or impromptu swim sans clothes, she’s guaranteed to be a good time, and you’ll never regret bringing her along. Until she tries to talk you into stealing the lambo and running off with the waiter. In which case I would refer to style #2, for a return to propriety and sensibility.

Levi's 70's High Flare Jeans, $108

Lee High-Rise Flare Jeans, $108

GRLFRND Melanie High Rise Boot Cut, $215

Gap High Rise '70s Flare Jeans, $80

4. Barrel-Leg/Tapered Jeans

The Trinity to his Neo. If you feel like escaping the fashion matrix and exploring untapped style frontiers, this trend is for you. Cutting edge and laser-focused, the barrel-leg, or tapered, jean is for the fashion innovator on the leading edge. A fitted waist that widens through the leg and tapers in at the ankle (which, according to Tan France, has the added bonus of making your legs look longer!), the barrel-leg jean is fresh, edgy, and will blast you into the fashion stratosphere faster than you can say KendallHaileyBieberJenner. Camila Morrone wore it best on her way to a recent Today Show appearance, and Lorna Humphrey (Symphony of Silk) is the personification of fashion pioneer but make it elegant. This edgy fashion girl is on a mission, and she won’t stop until she’s reached peak aesthetic – which we’re pretty sure looks like a transfigurated Joan Smalls in a Grecian gown holding lotus pose at the top of a mountain.

Abercrombie Pleated High Rise 80s Mom Jean, $60

5. Denim Maxi Skirt

Y2K but make it vogue. Listen up early aughts lovers: Y2K called and said its favorite denim trend is once again reporting for duty. That’s right, the denim maxi skirt is back, and is suddenly – just like the movie – everything, everywhere, all at once. And that’s good news for…all of us, because it looks good on everyone. From feminine Francophiles to party girls alike, the denim maxi skirt is universally flattering, and universally applicable to all personality types. Styled to perfection by Yasmin Bright with a fitted bodysuit, or Julie Ferreri with an adorable spring cardi, we can’t wait to throw one of these slitted beauties on and go for a cool/French/party/edgy girl stroll down a photo-op-worthy street, sold out baguette bag in hand.
