Joey Graziadei’s season of The Bachelor has led to a resurgence in the franchise, so much so that fans can’t help but want more than one episode per week to binge, leading many to rewatch old seasons. From some of the most genuine and heartwarming seasons like Sean Lowe’s and Ben Higgins’ or more dramatic ones like Nick Viall’s and Clayton Echard’s, none top the chaos of the most hated lead in the history of the franchise, Juan Pablo Galavis.

Why Juan Pablo’s Season Was So Controversial

Fans first met Juan Pablo during Desiree Hartsock’s season of The Bachelorette in 2013. Despite not making it to hometowns and getting little screen time, he quickly became a fan favorite for his good looks, sexy accent, and being a single dad of an adorable little girl named Camila. This surge of popularity among fans led him to become The Bachelor, and his season aired in 2014. Unfortunately, his popularity didn't last, and to this day, he’s still considered to be the most controversial Bachelor in the history of the franchise.

The season started off like any other, with elaborate dates and contestants with sad backstories, but Juan Pablo started to show a lack of empathy toward the women on the show as the season went on, and he became entirely insufferable during Fantasy Suites week. Unfortunately for the final three contestants – Nikki Ferrell, Clare Crawley, and Andi Dorfman – they had to experience it all firsthand.

Fantasy Suites week is when contestants have the opportunity to spend time off-camera with the lead overnight, and it’s heavily implied that many take the opportunity to have sex (if this sounds familiar, it’s exactly when Clayton Echard’s season went awry). After Andi’s fantasy suite date, she awoke with a newfound anxiety about her relationship with Juan Pablo.

She called it the "worst date she'd ever been on" and later claimed that Juan Pablo told her she “barely made it” to the final three and that he bragged about having sex with Clare the night before. Andi confronted Juan Pablo the next day to tell him that she felt like he knew nothing about her, and she knew a lot about him. He infamously responded with, “It’s okay.”

Andi left after the conversation and went on to become the lead on The Bachelorette. She married Blaine Hart in a three-day wedding celebration in Sorrento, Italy in 2023.

Juan Pablo’s worst moment came during his last date with Clare. During a moment away from the cameras, he reportedly whispered, “I love f—king you, but I don’t know you.” Clare, understandably, found the comment “insulting” and “offensive.” It was cringe and disgusting, but it made her telling him off after he said she wasn’t the one even more satisfying to watch.

After dumping Clare, he gave his final rose to Nikki but didn’t propose to her and didn’t even tell her that he loved her. He simply asked her to be his girlfriend and said, “I like you a lot.” They went on to date for a few months before breaking up in October 2014. When asked why they broke up, Nikki told E News, "There was a while where I did feel like he was totally in love with me. Was it too late? Probably. I think at that point I had come to the conclusion that we were different people and we were never going to be on the same page."

Juan Pablo’s Post-Bachelor Life

Juan Pablo’s finale angered Bachelor fans, and he didn’t get the rosy treatment or lasting fanbase that most leads get when the season ends. Very few fans thought he and Nikki were a cute couple, and he seemed happy to be out of the spotlight once the season ended.

In 2017, Juan Pablo married Venezuelan TV host Osmariel Villalobos in a “very, very secret” ceremony. Unfortunately, they divorced in 2020 after less than three years of marriage. Osmariel announced the divorce on Instagram, where she wrote, “The happy endings in the stories of Disney are my favorites and I grew up yearning to marry a prince, have a beautiful home, a family and eventually a HAPPY ENDING, even though my marriage was not, at all well, I thank God for letting me live this experience and to continue staying in my hope that at some point, be able to live that fairy tale.”

She continued, “I want to close this chapter of my life in the same way it began, with LOVE, because even though I didn’t have a fairy tale, Juan Pablo tried to make me happy and I [tried to] make him happy … and in reality that is most important. You deserve this clarification, and so here it is. We are divorced.”

Shortly after the divorce was announced, both Juan Pablo and Osmariel deleted pictures of each other from their Instagram pages.

In 2021, Juan Pablo made headlines again when he reunited with ex and Bachelor winner, Nikki Ferrell. Despite the controversy surrounding him, there seems to be no beef between Juan Pablo and Nikki. She told E News, "He's so caring. … He's a good person, I don't have anything bad to say. It's just a difference of lifestyles. He cared so much about me and my family, and he's a good person, he really is."

While their reunion caused a lot of buzz among Bachelor fans on Instagram, Juan Pablo and Nikki ultimately didn’t get back together. Nikki is now happily married with a son.

Where Is Juan Pablo Now?

According to Juan Pablo’s LinkedIn, he works as a FIFA agent as well as a sports and music consultant. He started the company Red Wine Management with a few of his friends, which helps "discover, guide and develop singers, songwriters, and producers, as well as creators in the pursuit of their professional careers."

Unlike most previous Bachelor leads, Juan Pablo doesn’t capitalize off his Instagram account. He has a decent following but doesn’t post brand deals, or do appearances, or host a podcast. Many of his posts are simply of him living his life and of his daughter, Camila, who recently turned 15. He doesn’t appear to be dating anyone currently, but we highly doubt he’ll be on The Bachelor again anytime soon. Despite the controversy, he has never apologized for the way he treated the women on his season of The Bachelor, and we doubt he ever will.

Closing Thoughts

The Bachelor franchise is no stranger to controversy, but nothing was as controversial as Juan Pablo Galavis. From treating the women on his season poorly to not taking Fantasy Suite dates seriously and caring very little about what Bachelor Nation as a whole felt toward him, it’s pretty easy to see why. Ironically, his ex-girlfriend and season winner, Nikki Ferrell, speaks highly of him, which can’t be said for popular contestants and Bachelorette leads like Clare Crawley and Andi Dorfman. Is Juan Pablo truly the jerk we saw on TV or was he just not meant to be The Bachelor? The world may never know.
