This Trashy Fashion Trend Is Making A Comeback (Unfortunately)

The last few red carpet events showed how popular the visible bra trend has become, and we can't say we're too excited about it.

The red carpet at award shows always reveals what the latest fashion trends are, and over the last year we've seen a variety of popular looks, such as extreme cutouts and ornamental breast plates. Last year, when Anne Hathaway showed up to the Valentino couture show in Rome with a pink sequined minidress and sky-high pink platform heels, it was the peak of Barbiecore. Virtually everyone joined in, including Zendaya, Nicola Peltz Beckham, Megan Fox, Kim Kardashian, and Lizzo. The head-to-toe pink ensemble was a fun one to watch and maybe even participate in, but not every single red carpet trend is a winner.

The Visible Bra Trend Is Hot in 2023

At the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, the visible bra trend (also referred to as the lingerie trend) was in full force. In the early 2000s, visible underwear (bra, panties, thong, etc) wasn't exactly an outward trend, but there were so many wardrobe malfunctions (intentional or not) that it might as well be categorized as one. Bra straps were peeking out of dresses (very Carrie Bradshaw circa 2003). Underwear straps were emerging from low-rise jeans. The tabloids loved to cover these fashion faux pas, and some could argue that there were enough celebrities who enjoyed being in the headlines for a peekaboo bra.

But now the bra is being embraced as part of the outfit, and we're not talking about the kind of bra you see when you're wearing a tank top to the grocery store. It's the kind of bra that is purposely visible with a gown on the red carpet. Cannes hasn't been the only place where the visible bra trend has been white hot; plenty of other photo opportunities and award shows have made it clear that this trend isn't going anywhere. Some of the inspiration comes from the corset trend, which was made popular by Bridgerton, and there are many different ways to make the peekaboo bra your own. Some celebs just wear a bra underneath a blazer jacket, while others will wear a couture gown that has a visible built-in bra.

It's meant to be the perfect cross between ultra-sexy and somewhat mysterious, but most of the time, it just looks downright trashy. There have been some red carpet looks that manage to make it look decent, but even those dresses would just be better off if the bra were invisible. But you be the judge for yourself. Here are some of the most popular visible bra looks on the red carpet lately.

Sydney Sweeney

Sydney Sweeney showed up to Cannes with her fiancé Jonathan Davino, and her peekaboo bra was a few shades darker than her dress. Not her best look.

Zoe Saldana

At the Academy Awards, Zoe Saldana wore an ivory Fendi gown that included a visible bra with singlet straps. The silhouette was pretty, but it wasn't exactly a head-turner.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

The British supermodel could pull off anything, and this is the best interpretation of the visible bra trend that you can find. But it still doesn't look nearly as beautiful as her other recent looks.

Olivia Wilde

The Vanity Fair afterparty had a few visible bra outfits, and Olivia Wilde's was one of the worst.

Tessa Thompson

Tessa Thompson also showed up to the Vanity Fair afterparty with a strapless rose bra peeking out from underneath her black dress.

Florence Pugh

An oversized pink jacket was paired with a black scrappy bra and black pants. Florence is known for her daring looks on the red carpet, but this one was a hot mess.
