Rihanna Says Motherhood Helped Her "Evolve" And She Won't Expose Her Nipples Again

According to Rihanna, her "free the nipple" era is over. Why? She says that becoming a mother has made her seriously question some of her past fashion choices.

Pop icon Rihanna, 36, has always made bold fashion moves and she's never shied away from the risque choices...until now.

"It's going to sound so hypocritical because I did so much sh*t in my life," she recently revealed to an interviewer who asked about her style. "I had my nipples out, I had my panties out. Now those are things, I guess, as a mom, I'm an evolved young lady."

"Young," she repeated playfully. "Emphasis on 'young.'"

She went on to explain that becoming a mother was the catalyst for this new self-awareness. She and her boyfriend, ASAP Rocky, welcomed son RZA in 2022 and daughter Riot Rose in 2023.

"These are just things I feel like I would never do," she added. "I'm just like 'Oh my god, I really did that? Nips out?'"

Many people on X celebrated the "evolution," saying that it reflects maturity and growth.

Other women agreed with her sentiment, saying that they, too, question their past fashion choices.

However, some said they would miss the "old Rihanna" and shared tributes to her most revealing outfits.

While the response was overwhelmingly supportive, some critics pointed out that she's still modeling for Fenty in skimpy lingerie, and her recent photos for Interview Magazine were considered highly disrespectful.

Interestingly, in the accompanying article for Interview Magazine, Rihanna shared the impact she believes God has had on her life and family.

"Covid sped up our relationship, which I felt like God knew we needed because we were going to start a family. And had it not been for Covid, we would’ve taken a lot more time to get comfortable with each other, to even know that we were ready."

"I mean, we didn’t even really talk about it. There was no denying it. It was the best thing that ever happened to us. It just happened," she stated. "I let God lead and just let go. Because in previous relationships, I tried and tried and tried my best, and you still feel like it’s not enough. So when someone sees you completely, and believes in you, and thinks you’re worthy of being the mother of their kids, it’s a great feeling. I felt the same about him. I knew he would be a great dad."

When asked how many more kids she would have, she answered, "As many as God wants me to have," said the multi-Grammy Award winner. "I don’t know what God wants, but I would go for more than two."

Closing Thoughts

It does seem like Rihanna is going through a personal evolution as a new wife and mother, and it seems to be inspired by the love and joy she feels raising a family. Given the hyper-sexualized image she's crafted over the past decade in an industry that strongly opposes real femininity and traditional values, she'll likely face many obstacles as she makes changes, but we are rooting for her.
