Justin Bieber, Hailey, and Selena Gomez have made endless headlines in the past month, fueling many theories from the pop-culture fandom. It all started when purported "mean girls" Hailey, Justine Skye, Kendall Jenner, and Kylie Jenner uploaded a video that many believed to be directed toward Selena Gomez and the recent body-shaming she faced online. The girls have denied these allegations, of course – but the situation got worse weeks later when Kylie and Hailey seemingly "shaded" Selena's eyebrows on Instagram.

The rumored feud sparked a wave of Selena fans to do a deep-dive into Hailey's history of being a Jelena fan, and how she would seemingly copy the "Love You Like a Love Song" singer. Since then, social media users have begun calling Hailey a "stalker." More recently, however, she's been dubbed a "visa." Here's why.

Was Justin Bieber Going To Propose to Selena Gomez?

Before we get into the visa details, we have to take a step back and review Justin and Hailey’s marriage timeline.

We all know that Justin and Selena were involved in an on-and-off relationship for eight years. The last time Jelena was spotted was in 2018, just two months before he announced his engagement with Hailey Baldwin. But fans believe Justin had proposed to Selena when they were together, only for him to get turned down.

Justin then rekindles his romance with Hailey, and they share the news of their engagement. Why the hurry, though? Maybe it's because Justin thought marriage would solve his problems, something he’s admitted to believing once in the past (it turns out he was wrong).

Selena fans believe there’s another reason.

Fans Believe Justin Bieber Married Hailey for a Visa

TikTokers began making videos on – what they believe – is the "real" reason behind Hailey and Justin’s abrupt marriage. According to some people, the Canadian-born singer might have been pushed to wed Hailey for a visa. The rumor began when DJ Khalid and Drake’s song “Popstar” resurfaced online.

Justin is seen in the music video mouthing the lyrics “Ariana, Selena, my visa,” which some people believe refers to the girls he’s been with. Fans speculate “my visa” is referring to Hailey. Justin has allegedly always resided in the U.S. on what is known as the O-1 visa, which is for “individuals with an extraordinary ability in the arts or extraordinary achievement in motion picture or television industry.” Unfortunately for the 29-year-old, the O-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa – and it doesn't lead to permanent residency, which is what he needs to be a citizen.

Justin Bieber Applies for U.S. Citizenship and Marries Hailey Shortly After

In July 2018, Hailey and Justin announced their engagement to the world. Two months later, Justin was reported to have applied for U.S. citizenship. Several articles were written around this time period stating that Justin has always had a green card, which is also known as a permanent resident card. This visa can lead to citizenship after five years or three years if they file as a spouse of a U.S. citizen.

Here’s the weird part – older articles say that Justin didn’t have permanent residency. In 2015, the New York Times reported that Justin was on an O-1 and not a green card. If this is true, is it possible that Justin married Hailey to apply for the immigrant visa so that he could finally be a dual citizen?

A U.S. marriage green card allows a foreign spouse to live and work in the country. They can also apply for citizenship after three years – but if you're applying under the three-year rule, you might face scrutiny over the authenticity of your marriage. The five-year rule, however, doesn't need to consider the "marital union" portion of the visa, so someone under this visa might have a higher chance of becoming a U.S. citizen if they apply after five years. But why would Justin want U.S. citizenship in the first place?

The "Baby" singer used to be a bad boy. He reportedly egged his neighbor's house, was accused of street racing, and allegedly admitted to using drugs in 2014. His behavior prompted a petition asking the White House to deport him. Apparently, Justin's attorneys were working out a plea deal for his crimes – we’re not sure what they agreed on, but maybe it led to Justin eventually seeking citizenship.

Justin Bieber Jokes His Marriage Was “Arranged”

A resurfaced video of Justin saying his marriage with Hailey was arranged only fueled the visa rumors.

When speaking with Demi Lovato, Justin says, “I think because she was raised Christian and they found out that –” he pauses and continues, “I think it was an arranged marriage, I’m pretty sure. Looking back now, it was definitely an arranged marriage, they set this whole thing up.”

Justin may have meant this as a joke – but as you can tell, many people didn't take it as such. And, based on what we've seen on TikTok and Twitter from Selena Gomez fans, it's likely these theories aren't going away anytime soon!
