The iconic Barbie doll disrupted the toy industry when it was first released in 1959. It was the very first doll released that had adult-like features; prior to the beloved Barbie, all the dolls available in stores were little girls or babies. The new teaser trailer for Greta Gerwig's upcoming film Barbie doesn't let this piece of history go to waste.
First Official 'Barbie' Teaser Trailer Reveals Margot Robbie Come to Life as the Iconic Doll
We haven't been given many details on Barbie, even though we've seen some stills from the film in which Margot Robbie appears as the perfect Barbie doll alongside Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken. Gosling has made some cryptic comments before about how Ken is represented in the movie, and you might be surprised to know that he's kind of a loser who has no job, car, or money.
While the first official teaser trailer of Barbie doesn't give us many more details, it gives us a brief introduction to the shiny, plastic world of the Barbie doll. The trailer starts with a spoof of 2001: A Space Odyssey, using the same soundtrack while setting up the scene of the brand new Barbie doll. Little girls in what appears to be 1950s fashion play serenely with their dolls.
“Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been dolls. But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls. Until …”
A humongous version of Margot Robbie appears, wearing a strapless, striped one-piece bathing suit with big white sunglasses and heels. When the young girls playing with their baby dolls see her for the first time, they appear shocked and start destroying their dolls in slow motion.
That's when we're introduced to the Barbie world for the first time, in all its pink, bubbly glory. We see glimpses of singing and dancing, with lots and lots of color, before the trailer abruptly ends. The Barbie universe seems to be as entertaining as we imagine in our wildest dreams.
Barbie will be released in July 2023.
