"Velma" Gets Renewed For Season 2 Despite Poor Ratings

Who is asking for a second season of "Velma"?

Mindy Kaling's Velma had a poor reception after its release in early 2023, dethroning Dragonball Evolution with a rating of 1.7 out of 10 – an incredible feat.

The series garnered backlash because the jokes were awful and the adorable Velma we knew and loved had turned into a bratty teenager.

The show didn't just lack humor, but it was also slammed for Kaling's alleged "self-insert" in the show. One hit tweet responding to a screenshot of the show reads, "the fact that Velma is just an obvious self insert for mindy kaling is so f*cking lame."

It continues, "the main character of this show isn’t Velma. It’s mindy. Mf is literally just writing a fanfic about herself that appeals to literally no one."

To make matters worse, there was a scene of a nonconsensual kiss in the show... and Kaling revealed in an interview years before that she had kissed her co-star (Lee Pace) without his permission. Maybe the self-insert rumors are true.

To this day, Velma sits at a rating of 1.6 on IMDB – so imagine our shock when Velma's renewal was announced. According to Suzanna Makkos, the EVP and Head of Original Comedy & Animation Max/Adult Swim, the cartoon remake has been renewed for a second season at Max. Yet, despite the controversy that it managed to garner, Velma had strong viewership on then-HBO Max.

“The series that we create at Max are art and voice driven, with character and comedy coming before anything else,” Makkos said. “We’re always looking for hard comedy with heart and edge, diverse and inclusive shows with underlying thematic resonance, and character design that showcases the hand of the artist. I am so excited to share these incredible series with the world, and continue to show why Max is a great home for adult animation.”

As announced by Max on X, the Velma season 2 release date has been set for April 25. Mark your calendars, I guess?

I'm so tired of remakes.
