Traditional values simply aren't seen as cool anymore, so it's sometimes surprising to hear that some of our most popular pop culture icons actually practice them in real life.

But that didn't stop these celebrities from choosing to wait for marriage.

Adriana Lima

In an interview with GQ back in ’06, Brazilian model and former VS Angel Adriana Lima boldly and plainly stated that sex is for after marriage. She cited her Catholic faith as her foundation for this conviction. Despite societal pressures, she remained a virgin until she married Marko Jarić in 2009.

Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow — tight end for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Heisman Trophy winner, two-time national champion in college, and former minor league baseball player — is an all-around stud and truly a good guy. Despite the fact that he was one of the most eligible bachelors for quite some time, Tebow waited until he married former Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.

Ashley Graham

Model Ashley Graham spoke openly about the fact that she and now-husband Justin Ervin didn’t have sex until after they were married: “Because we weren’t sleeping together — for Justin, abstinence was a firm commitment to his faith — we never tempted ourselves by going over to each other’s apartments late at night. But we’d go to late movies or take walks through the city together.” She and Justin welcomed their first child, Isaac, in January 2020.

Kevin Jonas

The oldest of the Jonas Brothers, Kevin waited until he married his wife Danielle. Like his brothers, he wore a purity ring to symbolize his commitment to virginity until after marriage. He and Danielle celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary in December 2020.

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber once had a bad boy reputation. Then, he found God and rekindled a relationship with his now-wife Hailey. In an interview with Vogue, he explained their decision to abstain from sex until marriage, citing his past sex addiction and newfound faith as primary reasons.

“He doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff,” Justin explains. “He’s like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain. I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result,”

Lolo Jones

In 2012, Olympian Lolo Jones told HBO’s Bryant Gumbel that she planned to remain a virgin until marriage. “It’s… a gift I want to give to my husband,” she stated and then added, “it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. Harder than training for the Olympics.”

Carrie Underwood

Country singer Carrie Underwood and hockey player husband Mike Fisher waited until they said “I do.” She told Slate Magazine in ‘07 that she would remain a virgin until marriage, shocking many. She and Fisher wed later that year and now have two adorable boys.

Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff practiced abstinence before marrying her first husband, Mike Comrie. She told Elle in 2006 that her virginity is something that she liked about herself. The mother of three is now married to Matthew Koma and seems to really be rocking the mom life.

Andy Grammer

Singer Andy Grammer and wife Aijia waited until they were married to have sex, but Grammer admitted that his journey with virginity was not without a painful addiction to pornography. “I feel for men right now because it’s never been this easy to do something so destructive to yourself,” he said of our digital culture and easy access to pornography. He and Aijia, happily married, now have two beautiful children.

Bethany Hamilton

On her website, surfer Bethany Hamilton shared the beauty of waiting until marriage, writing that although it wasn’t easy, she’s deeply thankful that she waited for her husband. “I don’t share this to boast, but rather in hopes that it might inspire patience and commitment in you for that one lucky man you will one day call your husband. And what a gift you’ll be giving to him! I PROMISE, the wait for your husband is well worth it. Deep and lasting sweetness awaits you.” In February, she and husband Adam Dirks, a Christian youth minister, welcomed their third child.

Ciara

In 2015, singer Ciara revealed that she and NFL star boyfriend Russell Wilson planned to abstain until marriage. “It’s until the deal is sealed,” she stated. The couple tied the knot in 2016 and now have two children together.

Jessica Simpson

Before her marriage to Nick Lachey, Simpson told People Magazine, “My virginity is something I stand strong in. It’s not always easy. But I do respect it. Virginity can be cool and sexy.” She and Lachey divorced in 2006. She married former NFL player Eric Johnson in 2014.

Closing Thoughts

In a world where it’s becoming increasingly unpopular to save sex until marriage (or even until commitment), it’s encouraging to see public figures doing just that. Hopefully they will be able to use their influence to shift the tide of our culture, making marriage and commitment cool again.
