Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, there has been an onslaught of fear-mongering from progressives about women not being able to receive necessary healthcare now that abortion is no longer federally protected. One story in particular has gone viral and caught the attention of the whole country.
When President Biden announced his executive order to protect access to abortion, he told the story of a 10-year-old girl in Ohio who had been raped and was seeking an abortion across state lines. He used this story as a fear-mongering tactic to convince people that abortion is necessary and should be available on demand.
“This isn’t some imagined horror. It is already happening. Just last week, it was reported that a 10-year-old girl was a rape victim — 10 years old — and she was forced to have to travel out of state to Indiana to seek to terminate the pregnancy and maybe save her life,” he said at the press conference.
The story was originally told by the Indianapolis Star, a publication that claimed an Ob/Gyn named Dr. Caitlin Bernard was sent a 10-year-old girl who was six weeks, three days pregnant, and Ohio had just outlawed abortion after six weeks. This meant the girl had to travel across state lines to seek an abortion. No other details about the girl's situation were mentioned in the story. It turns out this story is very likely false.
Story about 10-Year-Old Rape Victim Seeking an Abortion Is Unverified and Likely False
The first red flag from this story was that there was no mention of a police report about a young girl being raped and impregnated. Many people wondered whether the criminal who raped her was caught or at least identified to the police. But there was no mention of this in the original article by the Indianapolis Star. Even so, multiple media sources—The Washington Post, CNN, The Hill, Politico, Teen Vogue—piggybacked off this story and reported it as truth.
There was only one source for this story—Dr. Bernard. She claimed that she was contacted by a child abuse doctor about this 10-year-old, but she never verified that this doctor contacted the authorities and filed a police report. The Daily Caller reached out to Dr. Bernard for further information in an attempt to verify this story. "I'm sorry, but I don't have any information to share," she wrote back. Snopes (a left-wing site for what it's worth) even attempted to contact Dr. Bernard, and she didn't respond to them. Even the lead reporter for the IndyStar, Shari Rudavsky, who wrote the original article, wasn't able to verify any additional sources.
It's important to note that Dr. Bernard, a doctor who performs abortions, has been an advocate for on-demand abortion and has been featured in Politico, The Republic, PBS, and various local news stations.
The story spread like wildfire and became the mouthpiece for all progressives who support abortion on-demand. But very few people have questioned whether this story is true. Under the law, any physician presented with a case like this is required to report to child welfare or law enforcement the sexual abuse of a minor. And yet no criminal investigation has been found that correlates with this story, according to the office of Ohio governor Mike DeWine.
President Biden and his administration have yet to comment on this or retract the statements he made in his speech last week.
Editor's Note: As of July 13, the identity of the rapist has been identified and he has been arrested and charged.
