Overalls Aren’t Just For Girls—The Cutest Overalls For The Grownup Woman

Arguably, one of the best fashion trends to reemerge from the ‘90s is overalls. Your first thought may be, “The overalls that my mom stuck me in when I was 5? No thanks.”

Don’t want to look like you’re gathering livestock on a farm or painting your fixer-upper? I promise you don’t have to! Although there are certainly practical overalls for getting your hands dirty, there are also overalls that can easily take the place of your favorite midi dress for lunch with the girls on a Saturday afternoon.

The key to wearing denim overalls if you do want to stick with a classic fabric is to find a slim-fitting pair that hugs your curves in all the right places. Alterations could also prove to be important here as you don’t want them to be too long where they look like they’re swallowing your frame or dragging on the ground (especially since you’ll likely be wearing them with flats, not something providing extra height).

As for styling, since overalls are a casual silhouette traditionally, in order to elevate them it’s important to keep a few tips in mind. First and foremost, accessories are essential for adding femininity to your outfit. You can use a cute straw hat (if it’s summer) or a wide brim wool fedora (for the fall) to add some flair. Next, layer on a dainty necklace or bracelet, and add some huggie hoop earrings to finish off the look.

If it’s a little chilly outside, add a denim jacket over a pair of linen or cotton overalls, or layer a cute bodysuit underneath the pair. If the overalls you’re choosing are fairly plain on their own, wearing a blouse with frills or pretty details underneath can really make a statement. Just make sure not to overdo it with your accessories or shoes if you go this route.

Speaking of shoes, let’s consider what looks best with overalls. Heels would rarely look appropriate with a pair of overalls (as opposed to a jumpsuit where it can work effortlessly), so in most cases it’s best to stick with flats. In the summer, a pair of espadrilles or cute sandals will do the trick, while in the fall you can opt for booties or sneakers.

Lastly, if you’re planning on heading to the Farmers Market or running some errands, a belt bag, backpack, or canvas tote bag would be perfect, while a small neutral crossbody purse is ideal if you’re heading to a restaurant or social gathering.
