United States Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez attended the 2021 Met Gala while wearing a white, designer dress with the words "Tax the Rich" written on it in red font. 15 months later, the celebrity-politician is now being investigated after conservative groups filed complaints against her for accepting expensive Met Gala tickets, allegedly breaking House rules. One complaint by the National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC) reports that AOC willingly received the tickets from a table sponsor for herself and her boyfriend.

"Representative Ocasio-Cortez may have violated the House Gift Rule by accepting free admission for herself and boyfriend to the Met Gala event and receiving related gifts before, during, or after the event, including the use of custom-designed dress, limousine service, the use of the Carlyle Hotel, professional hair and makeup services, and any other related services or goods," their complaint stated.

On December 7, 2022, the Committee on Ethics released a brief statement regarding AOC. "The Acting Chairwoman and Acting Ranking Member of the Committee on Ethics have jointly decided to extend the matter regarding Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which was transmitted to the Committee by the Office of Congressional Ethics on June 23, 2022," the document writes.

However, AOC's spokesperson told Forbes on Wednesday that she's confident the case will be dismissed, adding that AOC "has always taken ethics incredibly seriously."

AOC's fashion statement at the Met Gala in 2021 sparked controversy on social media platforms, as her fans and detractors passionately discussed her infamous publicity stunt. "we've now reached the ‘it's actually totally cool and normal for our fav socialist yaaas kween politician to go to exclusive opulent gatherings of elites bc she's spreading class consciousness there!’ level of derangement in the AOC cult fandom," wrote @zei_squirrel after the event.

"AOC wanted to hang out with a bunch of rich celebs at a cool party without losing her socialist street cred so she tossed “Tax the Rich” on the back of her dress & called it a day. It’s not much more complicated than that," added @JerryDunleavy.

To summarize, as AOC dawned a white dress at an exclusive event (that managed to raise $33.7 million dollars) full of elites and wealthy individuals, many Americans couldn’t help but think it was all an act. “AOC's dress is performative. criticizing the dress is also performative,” writes @nsfwonks, “everything is performative. we're all performing. welcome to clown school.”
