Fall is arguably the most intriguing style season. The most thoughtful. The most sophisticated. Because as much as we love springy crop tops and summery sundresses, by the time September rolls around, we’re ready for more. As in, more fabric. As in sweaters and layers with long sleeves and even longer necks (turtlenecks are winter’s crop top). As in, cover me from head to toe at the first hint of a chill – being cold is for the birds.

When it comes to weather, fall really is the best of both worlds. The summer heat has abated, and the winter cold hasn’t yet set in, which means being outside is actually enjoyable. The leaves are changing, and you’ve got your pumpkin beverage of choice – and tickets to your alma mater’s football game – in hand. All is right in the world. Temps hover between 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit, but even when it does feel a little chilly, you’ve not a care in the world, because there’s a jacket for that. Or a sweater. Or a scarf. And as it is our eternal quest to never feel an ounce of discomfort, fall fashion, via its beautifully rich colors and abundant faux fur trims, affords us the opportunity to have our style cake and eat it too. (We really couldn’t have designed it better ourselves.)

But despite fall fashion always being delightful, this year hits differently. Fall 2023 fashion isn’t your mother’s preppy sweaters and perfectly reasonable slacks. This year, fall fashion is smart, modern, sexy. Fall ‘23 is giving empowerment; it’s encouraging you to apply for that new job, take a chance on a budding juicy relationship, try the pottery class you’ve been eyeing. Fall ‘23 wants you to become the best version of yourself – and it’s giving you all the tools.

We’re taking our cues from the all-knowing style gods and jumping in (booted) feet first via these fall trends:

Scandi Chic

Scandi chic isn’t new, but it is everywhere this fall. We’re talking ubiquitous Oxford-style button-downs and relaxed, pleated trousers. Medium-wash boyfriend jeans paired with classic, sophisticated flats. Pulled back hair, and simple – more chunky than dainty – jewelry. Think pared-down capsule wardrobe with high quality staples you can mix and match with ease. Understated elegance and simplicity are what stand out.

Everlane Relaxed Oxford Shirt, $88

Banana Republic Siena Wide-Leg Italian Wool Pant, $150

Levi’s Baggy Dad Women’s Jeans, $108

The (Em)Power(ed) Suit

As much as we love a tailored, fitted look, there’s something about an oversized power suit that is really getting us this fall. Its cool, early ‘90s chic seems to be signaling that we may be arriving at a happy medium culturally, where women truly can choose what they’d like to do with their lives, and there’s little standing in our way. It conveys relaxed ambition, coming from a place of intuition and natural human striving, rather than a need for external validation or proving a point. It feels apropos and like a new kind of feminism.

Topshop Pants and Vest Set in Beige, $80

Topshop Mensy Tapered Pants in Beige, $84

Everlane ‘80s Blazer, $175

Cherry Cola

We love this trend for two reasons: It inevitably invokes the throwback Kuwada ditty (delightful), and it’s a great way to hold on to summer for just a little longer. Because as much as we love a traditional muted fall palette, sometimes you just want to come out with a bang (enter fall’s hottest color). The cherry cola wave is building quickly, and we can’t wait to ride it all through fall.

Maeve Colette Maxi Skirt, $120

We The Free Jealousy Leather Moto Jacket, $698

Reformation Emersyn Dress, $298

Show Fur

2023 fur isn’t here for the show, it is the show. From fuzzy kelly green sweater dresses to exquisite faux fur trims, fall/winter’s main event is back with a vengeance, and we’ll take a front row seat every night, please. The quickest way to invoke a more comfortable climate when temperatures dip down low, our advice to any warm-weather-loving mami is this: just put a fur on it.

BLANKNYC Cropped Faux Fur Jacket, $98

BLANKNYC Pick Me Sherpa Bonded Jacket, $168

More To Come Payton Faux Fur Jacket, $118

Dark Romance

Wednesday Addams wannabes, rejoice! Gothic romance is hot this fall, and by hot, we mean very, very cold – and dark. A sensual riff on the dark academia trend that has been around for some time, dark romance is imploring you to channel your inner Morticia and embrace her spookiest, most alluring parts. Black as night and dripping with lace, dark romantic is pulling you deep into a pool of macabre intrigue and mysterious sensuality. But like, in a cute, fashion-y way. We’re in.

Free People Greta Lace Shirt, $98

Tuckernuck Black Guipure Lace Daphne Dress, $298

Anthropologie Lace Layering Turtleneck, $68

All Buttered Up

At this point, fall thought it best to lighten things up with a nice, safe “favorite breakfast condiment” of a fall fashion trend. Yes, butter yellow is here to make everyone’s day. The lighthearted answer to an otherwise very intensely pigmented color palette, wrapping yourself up in a cozy butter yellow sweater dress or furry/sexy heels this fall will give you the sunny pick-me-up you need after a stint in Maleficent-core. (Both are recommended.)

Anine Bing Jaci Sweatshirt University Los Angeles, $180

Bardot Capri Diamonte Slip Dress, $139

Bella Dahl Linen Button Down Blouse, $152

Gen Z Yellow

On the other end of the yellow spectrum is a trend so tart it’s almost lime green. “Gen Z yellow” is what the girls are calling it, and it seems to fit. Unapologetically individual, this hue stands apart and makes its own way in the world – with confidence. A surprising pick for fall, it’s refreshing in its ingenuity.

Maeve Printed Flutter-Sleeve Babydoll Dress, $148

Free People Sandre Pullover, $148

Endless Rose Shank Button-Front Knit Mini Dress, $160

Tartan Returns

If there was one fall trend that made me scream “YES” while scrolling in my kitchen, it was this. Tartan is back, and the timing couldn’t have been better. Just when we’re craving a return to normal after a tumultuous few years, tartan is back to say, “Remember me? I come, not from the government, and I’m here to help.” Representing classic patterns and traditional American values (borrowed from the Scots), tartan is something I think we can all agree is needed right now. A universal motif to represent our aspirations of unity. If that’s what it takes to bring a divided country together, consider this fall fashion staple fit for duty. Bravo, the little pattern that could.

Mare Mare Asymmetrical Pleated Skirt, $138

David & Young Exclusive Ruana Plaid Poncho, $68

Heartloom Bloom Mini Dress, $119

Tight As

The other fall trend we’re vocally enthusiastic about is this: hot girl tights, in many varieties. Tights were seen up and down the catwalk for fall, and they weren’t your grandmother’s tights. Chantilly-lace patterned, or solid and sheer, 2023 tights are hip, fresh, and tantalizing.

Full-length tights not your thing? Not to worry. The knee-high version is just as vogue this fall, and looks just as sexy with a shiny metallic sneaker or pretty ballet flat.

Free People Floral Lace Vein Tights, $38

Anthropologie Swiss Dot Tights, $32

Free People Total Betty Knee High Socks, $12

Jawline Bling

We’ll never get rid of our pretty, dainty jewelry, but we also wouldn’t mind adding some serious bling to the bunch. Statement earrings like those seen at Alexander McQueen, Zimmermann, and Chanel were all over runways for fall, and were as integral to the outfits as were the waistlines. From silver filigree to giant gold lotuses and everything in between, fall says your ears should say something, as they’re no longer just for listening.

Urban Outfitters Patti Oversized Hoop Earring, $17

Shashi x Revolve Sophia Earrings, $58

Anthropologie Textured Teardrop Earrings, $38

Closing Thoughts

2023 fall fashion has officially made its entrance, and it’s virtually impossible to ignore. Fall's top trends are genuinely empowering to the modern woman, and are inspiring us to reach new heights. As girls on a mission, it feels like our wardrobes might finally be catching up to our “anything is possible” energy – and we’re welcoming them to the club. So whether you’re lead counsel at Lanvin, or playing hometown honey at the local county fair, fall fashion is your wingwoman, and is certainly up to the task.
