You Might Have The "Influencer Accent" And Not Even Know It
Do you have the "influencer accent"? Here's what it sounds like.

You might have the "influencer accent" and not even realize it. But don't panic – it doesn't sound that bad, and it usually only happens when you're recording yourself talking.
The "accent" is easily missed by a lot of people, and I can only describe it as a vocal rollercoaster. Think of it this way: When you're having a conversation with someone, your pitch usually stays the same unless you're telling a crazy story. Those with the "influencer accent" have an up-and-down vocal pitch. Certain words are said in a high-pitched tone, and instead of them doing it when it's normal to (like when asking a question), it's done in the middle of sentences. Sometimes, their pacing is strange and unnatural sounding too. You can check out this woman's example below:
Why Does This Happen?
I speculate that the "influencer accent" happens when we're trying too hard to think of what to say. When you're in a normal conversation, you're usually going with the flow. You don't have to pause or think too hard. Meanwhile, when you're being recorded, you might feel some pressure and think too hard about your next words. When you're uncertain, confused, or afraid, the pitch of your voice may get higher.
Here's another example of an influencer doing the "influencer accent." Notice how her voice goes up at certain words like "ready," "in," and the "Jonas Brothers." A viewer in the comment section jokingly referred to the creator, @aspynovard, as "the pioneer of the influencer accent."
In a follow-up video, the TikToker acknowledges that she has it and gives her two cents on why it happens. It seems we're on the same page! "I feel like when you're filming or whatever, you're kind of thinking more about what you're gonna say," she explained. "So you might, like, talk a little bit slower, separate your words. Because I'm thinking about how I have to edit this and [how] it has to make sense."
@aspynovard continued, "And I feel like when you're having a conversation in real life. Obviously, you're also thinking about what you're going to say, but not in the same way as when you're filming yourself. "
So, do you have it? That probably means you're too self-conscious and overthinking what to say. The key is to be as comfortable and relaxed as possible. If you're finding yourself struggling with the influencer accent when you record yourself, keep practicing, and don't give up. Over time, you'll get better at communicating, and getting your point across will feel – and sound more – natural.
