Who Is Cat Janice? Viral TikTok Mom Dies Of Cancer After Giving Song Rights To Her Son To Support Him

Singer-songwriter Cat Janice released her first album in 2014. Her second work, Fire, was released the following year. After years of performing and gaining accolades – including a Washington Area Music Award in the category of Best Rock Artist – Janice found a lump in her neck in 2022.

The mother, who was diagnosed with Sarcoma (a rare cancer of the bones or soft tissue), revealed during her cancer treatment that she had transferred the rights of the song to her son, Loren. It was her desire to support him after her death. TikTok rallied around the mom, whose real name is Catherine Janice Ipsan, in January when she unveiled "Dance You Outta My Head."

"I changed all the rights of my songs to my son so I can leave him behind something," she wrote on a slideshow on TikTok on January 15, 2023. "I don't have much." Her legacy was released on January 19, just a few days after entering hospice care.

She continued, "I might not be here but my baby boy will be."

The heartbreaking post led viewers to stream the song and use it in their videos. Influencers danced to the song to raise awareness, and celebrities like Jason Derulo sent their support. "Dance You Outta My Head" went insanely viral, having been used on over two million videos on the platform.

A few weeks later, Janice announced that "Dance You Outta My Head" began charting on Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Top 40 list and had reached the No. 11 spot for Dance/Electronic digital sales. It later reached No. 1.

She wrote, "I am SHOCKED to be a Top 40 Billboard Charting artist on Hot Dance/Electronic and ALSO #11 on Digital Sales. YOU ALL DID THIS. You gave me my dream come true. Right when I needed it most. You all loved me back to life and gave me my 'one more moment alive'. When I wrote 'Wishing I Was You', I wrote those lyrics desperately wishing to have one more moment to scream from the roof tops and you all loved me so hard and gave me that moment and I am forever grateful. Whatever God brings my way I know I am loved."

On February 28, 2023, Janice's family announced on Instagram that she had tragically passed away at 31.

"This morning, from her childhood home and surrounded by her loving family, Catherine peacefully entered the light and love of her heavenly creator," their statement said.

"We are eternally thankful for the outpouring of love that Catherine and our family have received over the past few months. Cat saw her music go places she never expected and rests in the peace of knowing that she will continue to provide for her son through her music. This would not have been possible without all of you."

"Thank you ♥️," they continued, adding her Instagram page will be memorialized by Janice's brother, @the_last_cubby, and "will also manage all operations surrounding Cat’s music, merchandise, and public relations. Per Cat’s request, there is some more art that she wants to share too. All in due time. With Love, The Ipsans."
