"West Side Story" star Ansel Elgort was accused of sexual assault by a young woman who claimed their relationship was not consensual in 2014. Ansel’s co-stars in "West Side Story" are finally responding to the allegations.

West Side Story was released on December 10, 2021, and Ansel Elgort played the lead role of Tony. However, in 2020, a woman accused Ansel of sexually assaulting her when she was only 17 years old – and apparently a virgin. He was 20 years old at the time. The alleged victim also said Ansel tried to pressure her into having a threesome and taking nude photos of herself.

Ansel Elgort’s Response to the Allegations

Ansel maintained his innocence from the very beginning, announcing, “I have never and would never assault anyone.” He claimed it was a “brief, legal, and entirely consensual relationship” with the young woman whose name is Gabby.

He did, however, admit that he didn’t handle the breakup very well. “I stopped responding to her, which is an immature and cruel thing to do to someone,” he said. “I know this belated apology does not absolve me of my unacceptable behavior when I disappeared. As I look back at my attitude, I am disgusted and deeply ashamed of the way I acted. I am truly sorry. I know I must continue to reflect, learn, and work to grow in empathy.”

How the Cast of West Side Story Responded

Until now, the cast and crew of West Side Story have been quiet about these allegations. In fact, the trailer that was released last year featured Ansel as little as possible, and fans couldn’t help but notice.

Director Steven Spielberg declined to comment on the matter. But co-star Rachel Zegler spoke out for the first time. “We made a movie two and a half years ago, and a lot has gone on in the world since then,” she said. “A lot has changed very publicly, and privately as well. There’s been a lot of awakening. You just hope that the people involved are okay, that they are asked in a respectful manner, and that they are given the opportunity to answer for themselves.”

Actress Rita Moreno, who played Anita in the original and Valentina in the remake, also chimed in: “I think it would have been horrendous and wrong for anyone to take sides in that matter. It’s not for me to make those judgments.” Ariana DeBose, who played Anita, added, “Nobody really knows what’s going on in anyone’s head. Only the people who were involved in that situation know what actually went down.”

We will likely never know the full story of what happened with Ansel and Gabby, and neither will the co-stars. But we will keep an eye out for any new information if it unfolds.
