Abortion is marketed as an act of empowerment that helps women find independence and break free from the chains of the patriarchy. A Californian study revealed that, post-abortion , women were 160% more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric treatment in the subsequent 90 days. Of the women surveyed, 44% suffered nervous disorders, 31% expressed regret, and 11% were prescribed psychotropic medicine post-procedure. The physical aftermath of abortion includes long-term infections in 27% of the cases. Other major complications range from excessive bleeding, uterine perforation, anesthesia complications, convulsions, and cervical injury, to endotoxic shock. These statistics clearly dispel the narrative that abortion is pro-woman. However, there are still many abortion activists around the world who are hellbent on fighting for on-demand abortion for women everywhere. One harrowing case in the United Kingdom proves just how depraved abortion activists can be. A mother intentionally ended the life of her own baby in the womb, who was between 32 and 34 weeks gestation, and instead of shedding light on the horrible tragedy that resulted in the death of an innocent child, abortion activists are calling for legislation to change in favor of mothers who would like to impart the same fate on their babies. UK Mother Arrested for Aborting Her Baby at 32 Weeks Gestation The case of a 44-year-old mother of three, Carla Foster, who procured her own late-stage abortion during the coronavirus lockdown, has ignited discussions about abortion, leading many activists to demand a revision of the legislation that led to her imprisonment. Caroline Nokes, the Chairwoman of the Commons Women and Equalities Committee, has joined women's rights organizations in calling for an update to the 1861 law applied in Foster's case. Foster was sentenced to a 28-month extended term after confessing to procuring her own abortion when she was between 32 and 34 weeks pregnant. Currently, abortions are typically only legal before 24 weeks and are conducted in clinics after the 10th week of pregnancy. It was revealed that Foster failed to consult a doctor about her pregnancy due to embarrassment and uncertainty about her gestation period. Upon speaking with a British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) nurse, she was mailed abortion pills after falsely asserting that she was only seven weeks pregnant. The post-mortem determined that the child was between 32 and 34 weeks gestation when born, and the cause of death was listed as stillbirth and maternal use of abortion drugs. The case presented at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court revealed that Foster obtained the abortion drugs from the BPAS after lying about her stage of pregnancy during the pandemic lockdown. Internet searches traced back to Foster showed her attempts to understand how to conceal her pregnancy and have an abortion without medical assistance. Initially, Foster was charged with child destruction, to which she pleaded not guilty. However, she later admitted guilt to an alternate charge under section 58 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, which concerns the procurement of an abortion through drugs or instruments. This admission was accepted by the prosecution. The sentencing has resulted in significant public outrage. Nokes claims that this tragedy underscores the need for a more contemporary law, and she has urged Parliament to closely examine this issue. The Centre for Women's Justice director, Harriet Wistrich, questioned the public benefit of prosecuting and imprisoning Foster, completely ignoring the fact that Foster killed her own baby. She said this is more of an issue about better healthcare access and support. Amnesty International UK's Women's Human Rights Programme Director, Chiara Capraro, labeled the decision to prosecute as "shocking and quite frankly terrifying," demanding the urgent need for legal reform. The CEO of BPAS, Clare Murphy, argued that women like Foster deserve more from the legal system. For them, the only important thing is ensuring that mothers have the "right" to end the life of their own children. The Crown Prosecution Service recognized the complexity and trauma associated with the case but maintained that their duty lies in ensuring that laws are appropriately considered and applied during difficult charging decisions. While sentencing, Judge Mr. Justice Pepperall noted that the balance between a woman's so-called reproductive rights and the rights of her unborn child is an emotive and controversial issue, but ultimately one for Parliament to decide, not the courts. The maximum sentence is life in prison. Abortion activists will claim that the baby didn't take an "independent breath," according to the coroner's report (in other words, the baby was stillborn), and this is being used as a way to defend Foster. None of these activists admit that Foster intentionally lied about how far along she was in her pregnancy, and that she knowingly made a concerted effort to obtain medication that would end the life of her child. Reportedly, Foster showed "deep and genuine remorse" for her actions and was suffering from depression, nightmares, and flashbacks about her baby's death. The court showed that Foster went back to live with an ex-boyfriend even though he wasn't the father of the child, and she was trying to hide the pregnancy from him.
