The Tradwife Fight Isn't Really About Tradwives

The tradwife has become one of the most polarizing figures of the internet age. Depending on one's position on the ideological spectrum, she can represent either an aspirational role model embracing nostalgic values or a reactionary backlash against women's progress. For others, she is yet another influencer selling an attractive lifestyle through carefully staged images of family life. The debate has become so predictable that one can often anticipate the responses before reading them. It's worth noting that the label is almost always applied rather than claimed. Hannah Neeleman of Ballerina Farm told The Times that she does not identify with the term, and she later described the resulting coverage as an attack on her family and her marriage. Nara Smith , who was cast as the movement's poster child, said on Call Her Daddy earlier this week that she had to look the word up when it was first attached to her, that she works and runs her own business, and that she and her husband divide the cooking and cleaning between them. She has also said that the label cost her work. In a great deal of the coverage, the word functions less as a description than as an accusation, a shorthand for a woman assumed to be either oppressed or complicit. Somewhere amid the accusations and counteraccusations, however, we ignore the agency of these women themselves and how and why they justify their choices to pursue this lifestyle. As a researcher with a particular interest in online consumer cultures, I've always been curious to hear people's perspectives in their own words rather than through the interpretations of their critics. I also know that cultural phenomena do not emerge in a vacuum. Whether one approves of the tradwife movement or not, its growing visibility points to a desire that deserves to be understood before it's judged. The choice that still needs explaining As a woman who grew up in an Eastern European culture where motherhood and wifehood were viewed as identities worthy of celebration, I've often struggled with the tendency of contemporary media and scholarly debate in the West to approach the tradwife phenomenon through an overwhelmingly negative lens. Too often, women who express a desire to be wives and mothers are treated with suspicion rather than curiosity, as if the legitimacy of such priorities is self-evidently doubtful. Are we really arguing about whether these women deserve autonomy in their choices? We readily accept that women should be free to pursue demanding careers and prioritize professional achievement over family building, and these choices are rightly treated as legitimate expressions of personal freedom. Yet when women visibly prioritize marriage and homemaking instead of achieving professional success, their choices are often subjected to a level of suspicion rarely applied elsewhere. Living in the contemporary world that celebrates the freedom of choice and self-expression in all life domains, are we really arguing about whether these women deserve autonomy in their choices? Or are we engaging in a deeper debate about what constitutes a meaningful life? At its best, feminism expanded women's options by challenging the idea that women should be confined to predefined roles. Yet the version of empowerment that has become dominant in popular culture often appears inseparable from a consumer logic. As women, we're encouraged to do multiple things simultaneously, including building a personal brand, achieving professional success, maximizing our earning potential, maintaining our desirability, optimizing our health, and constantly reinventing ourselves to demonstrate that we are free and empowered. In this sense, the promise of unlimited choice creates its own pressure. When every aspect of our lives becomes a project, demonstrating our freedom and empowerment can very quickly begin to feel like work. One reason the tradwife message resonates with some women is that it offers an alternative to the demand that they should remain permanently available for reinvention. Resisting the framing of domesticity as a lack of ambition or a personal failure, these women reframe taking care of their families through maintaining a home and supporting a husband as activities that give higher meaning to their lives. The appeal of stability The popularity of the tradwife aesthetic may also be connected to the instability of contemporary life, or what the late sociologist Zygmunt Bauman called liquid modernity. Careers change quickly, housing is expensive, communities are fragmented, and digital culture fueled by algorithms exposes us to an endless stream of comparisons and possibilities, forcing us to constantly reinvent ourselves in response to changing circumstances. While this fluidity has undoubtedly created new opportunities, it has also produced new forms of anxiety. Many of the structures, such as community bonds of lifelong employment, that once gave people a sense of continuity have weakened or become more difficult to sustain. In such a world, it should not surprise us that some individuals begin searching for solidity. For some women, the tradwife lifestyle provides precisely that sense of solidity. It offers a recognizable rhythm and a clear division of responsibilities, where someone provides, someone nurtures, and the family life becomes a shared project that supplies a sense of continuity. Modern careers also carry risks, yet women are rarely asked to justify wanting one. Indeed, blindly idealizing such a lifestyle without seeing its potential risks would be quite careless. A single-income household can be financially vulnerable, and domestic work can be lonely when it's not supported or appreciated. But the fact that a lifestyle carries risks does not make the desire for it irrational. Modern careers also carry risks, yet women are rarely asked to justify wanting one. A different definition of success In the face of societal expectations to pursue demanding careers, the tradwives offer a different definition of success that lies in feeling connected to the people they consider most important. The language of femininity is often appearing in tradwife accounts, as the influencers keep promoting the message that femininity does not have to be a weakness, and that dependence within a loving relationship is not automatically the same as oppression. The statement above is intentionally provocative, and its binary is too simple to describe every woman's experience. Still, it captures the will to express that some women do not want to spend their lives proving that they can function exactly like men. Instead, they want permission to value qualities and relationships that do not translate neatly into professional status. We need a more generous conversation In the face of the omnipresent criticisms of the tradwife movement, which keep perpetuating a false dichotomy of whether women should prioritize family or professional success, what we really need to talk about is whether women are allowed to want different things without being reduced to victims, villains, or marketing symbols. Part of what makes the exchange so unproductive is that the central term is rarely neutral. The women most often called tradwives say they don't recognize themselves in the description, and the word tends to arrive already carrying a verdict, which leaves very little room for the person it's attached to. What we really need to talk about is whether women are allowed to want different things without being reduced to victims, villains, or marketing symbols. Yes, some influencers undoubtedly romanticize domestic life, minimize its difficulties, or present a highly edited version of family life; selling the dream is what social media is all about, and these criticisms undoubtedly deserve consideration. Yet they should not erase the agency of the women whose choices are supposedly being defended. Modern women should be free to pursue careers, marriage, motherhood, or some combination of the three. They should also be free to revise their choices as their circumstances change. If feminism expanded women's choices, its legacy should not be used to police those choices. No lifestyle is universally right for everyone, but as women we should have the resources, knowledge, and support we need to make choices that feel honest to us. The popularity of the tradwife movement suggests that many women are searching for an escape from a life of endless optimization and are drawn instead to a life that feels meaningful and connected to their loved ones. Recognizing the risks and difficulties of living in a single-income household should not erase the legitimacy of that choice.
