It’s exactly the kind of advice you need when you're trying to keep your head above water during your first year. But there is a different side to university life we need to address as well. It’s that moment when you sit down in your first seminar, look around at your peers, and realize that everyone in the room thinks entirely differently from you. If you dare to voice a different perspective—if you defend traditional family structures, question modern morality, or suggest that personal accountability matters—the room instantly goes dead silent. As a current student who is very vocal about my conservative views, I live through this every single week. Exams aren't the main challenge in university anymore. As women we are naturally conditioned to want harmony and smooth-running friendships. But the campus environment twists that desire into a weapon. If you don’t agree with everything, you get blocked on social media (or, worse, the students stalk your stories) and are slowly left out of social circles. Worse still, you realize the university administration itself is set up to protect their feelings, not your right to speak, making you worry a single report could derail your entire degree. But I'm living this right now, and I'm proof you don't have to spend three or four years playing a character just to graduate. Surviving the seminar standoff The first place you'll feel the pressure to cave is the classroom. The professor will pull up a PowerPoint slide packed with the latest hyper-progressive buzzwords, and the next hour becomes an unwritten competition to see who can repeat the mainstream talking points the fastest. Your immediate instinct, especially when you just want to get through the day, is to look down at your screen, nod along, and stay quiet so you don’t tank your marks. But hiding what you believe just to avoid awkwardness will soon become unbearable. You don’t need to be loud or turn every seminar into a massive political debate. The most effective way to challenge a bad argument is with confidence and calmness. Use facts and ask questions that force people to actually think about the clichés and social media slogans they're repeating. It tells the other girls in that room that they aren't the only ones who think differently. If you're terrified a leftist professor is going to mark you down, don't give in and submit an essay you don't believe in. I'll give an example. For one of my undergraduate politics modules, I received one of the highest marks ever given in the history of the course, whilst staying completely true to my own opinions. I did this by doubling my citations, grounding my arguments in research, and making my work so academically tight that they had no choice but to give me the mark I earned. Finding your network Society wants you to believe you’re completely alone. The internet and the campus culture push this idea that every interesting and cool girl today shares the exact same brain, and if you don't, you must be some bitter outcast. It’s a trick. If they make you feel isolated enough, you'll choose silence. When I founded my campus's libertarian society, it wasn't really because I wanted to build a political profile. I was just sick of waiting around for friends who wouldn't immediately hate me or talk behind my back the second I opened my mouth. I had to build my own space. If your university doesn't have a club or society that matches you, look at the debate clubs, economics groups, or independent magazines where free speech does exist. Better yet, fill the gap yourself and start one. Fill the gap yourself. Your people are on campus, but most are hiding in plain sight, playing along with the crowd just to avoid the hassle. You don't need a massive circle of friends who only like you as long as you agree with them. You just need a tight-knit circle of girls who value common sense. The dating disaster Finally, let's talk about the utter disaster that is the campus dating scene. If you're a woman looking for a man who can actually pick a restaurant and plan a proper date, college dating feels like a dead end. Today's dating landscape has successfully trained guys to be completely passive . On the one hand, you have the hypersensitive "soft boy" who acts like he needs a consent form for every interaction, and on the other, you have the hookup guy who thinks a date consists of text messages asking you to come over at midnight. We've convinced men that taking charge, planning an actual date, or acting like a protector is toxic masculinity. If you want a real relationship, set boundaries early, stop replying to the "U up?" texts at 11 p.m., and don't compromise your standards just because you get lonely on a Tuesday night. This forces a guy's hand: he either grows up and acts like a man, or he naturally removes himself from your life. A man who possesses strength and a sense of responsibility won't be intimidated by a girl who respects herself. He will be drawn to her because she expects a real courtship. Grit over conformity The version of "empowerment" taught on campus is a trap. You’re told that being empowered means throwing away all common sense, treating men like adversaries, and molding yourself into a hyper-independent, sterile box where you owe nothing to anyone. But true independence isn’t about blindly following progressivism because it has a "modern" label on it. It’s about having the grit to look at a room full of people screaming the same thing… and still choosing to think for yourself. Don't spend four years putting your true self on pause just to make life easier in a temporary campus echo chamber. University will test who you are. The looks, the seminar side-eye, and the constant pressure to fit in… they're exactly the reason you need to build a real foundation for the rest of your life.
