There are few things quite as uplifting as a classic “how we met” story. From childhood friends, to actors, to literally meeting in a candy shop, these "how we met" stories are as sweet as can be — and as diverse and interesting as the Evie writers themselves. Read on to see our writers’ charming "how we met" stories while getting to know the writers a little better at the same time.

A Sweet Beginning

“In my junior year of high school, I went looking for a part-time job and found myself applying to the local retro candy shop on my town's main street. During my first day of training, manually pricing candy with a sticker price gun (anyone else ever used those?), a guy two years my senior walked in who was supposed to be training me and instead posted up at the (manual) cash register. I took it as a challenge to get to know him. We started chatting about mutual interests like video games, among other niche cultural interests, and discovered we both had Disneyland passes.

He'd pick me up from campus when I was bored out of my mind, plugging through the end of my senior year, and drive us up to Disneyland. We bonded over a bunch of things. He challenged my preconceived notions about my political ideology, we became very close friends, and quickly started dating. You could say how we met was pretty ‘sweet’!” – Andrea Mew

An Unexpected Date

“My husband is the stepbrother of one of my clients at the hair salon! My client and I had a mutual close friend, so we hung out in the same friend group and became good friends. His stepbrother also hung out in our group. One day we had an ‘unexpected date’ when our other friends canceled on us. We spent the day together, and he continued asking me on dates ever since! We’ve been together for four years and will celebrate our one-year wedding anniversary in April.” – Hannah Leah

High School Sweethearts

“My husband and I met in middle school when we were both 13. After a few years of naturally floating in and out of each other's lives, we finally struck up a lasting friendship. He took me to the sophomore homecoming dance. At the time, I wasn’t romantically interested in him until I literally started dreaming about him every single night. It would be about stupid stuff too; for some reason, the most vivid one that I can remember entailed us walking through a forest looking for pinecones. All of these dreams made me realize just how important our friendship was to me, and that’s when I started to finally take a romantic interest. I couldn’t fathom an end to our friendship, and I also found myself wanting to be *more* than friends, but how to tell him. …

Everything wrapped up in the most teenage drama way possible. I let it ‘reluctantly’ slip to his friends that I liked him. Those friends told him. He canceled a date. A few days later, he told me that he ‘had a crush on someone’ as we lay on our backs on the football field. And later that night, I texted him that I had a crush on someone too and that we needed to tell each other at the same time. Sure enough, we were crushing on each other, but there was just one teensy little problem: I wasn’t 16 yet, and according to my parents, I wasn’t allowed to date until then.

So we waited, went on one date to the movies (with my parents’ permission), and saw that horrible Nick Cage apocalypse movie where that moose catches on fire (Knowing). About a month after my birthday, we officially became boyfriend/girlfriend. Why wait an entire month after my birthday to finally start dating, you ask? I got asked to senior prom by a friend, so out of respect for him, and to not make things weird, we decided to hold off. Since then, we’ve been together for 14 years and married for eight of them.” – Alicia Bittle

Classmates Working Together

“We met in an acting class. I was his first scene partner; we had to perform a scene where we were a married couple that finds out we’ve both been cheating on each other and breaks up by the end of the scene (eek). Somehow, we fell for each other over the course of performing such a heartbreaking scene for weeks. He found out my Starbucks order and brought it to our first rehearsal; we started texting for fun and not to set up rehearsals. I definitely had that ‘something is different about this guy’ feeling. One night, he offered to walk me home from class. On the way there, we stopped to sit and talk for a while. He asked if he could kiss me, and I said yes. The rest is history! We’ve been together now for five years, and married for three.” – Keelia Clarkson

Rediscovering an Old Family Friend

“I’ve known my husband since I was 10 years old! When we first met, he was my older brother’s college roommate, and because my mom is a trained chef, my brother and sister always brought their college friends over to eat meals at our house after they got tired of campus food. While they were in college, he basically started coming to our house and never left. I thought he was gross and weird at the time, of course. He eventually moved out of state, but since he and my brother are best friends, I still saw him from time to time. Fast forward yeeeeears later, and I was scrolling through Bumble at my sister’s house when who should pop up, but him! I immediately knew who it was, only this time I thought he was gorgeous. My sister encouraged me to go for it, and I swiped right. It was a match! We were engaged five months later, and our two year anniversary is in June!!!” – Gwen Farrell
