Taylor Swift Slammed For "Ignoring" Celine Dion At Grammys: "Disrespectful"
Taylor Swift is slammed for quickly grabbing her award from Celine Dion and ignoring her at the Grammy Awards.
An "awkward" interaction between Taylor Swift and Celine Dion has sparked outrage online.
Celine Dion has been serenading millions of people for over 35 years and is a legend in her own right. Most people would be thrilled to be in the same room as the "My Heart Will Go On" singer.
However, when Dion handed the Grammy Award to Swift after winning Album of the Year, Swift immediately headed toward the mic. Naturally, the audience was shocked. Check out the exchange below:
"Taylor Swift receives her Grammy from the GOAT Celine Dion and she doesn't even make eye contact with her. Disrespectful," wrote @Knesix on X (formerly Twitter).
"The overrated #TaylorSwift hugging all of her people but taking the trophy from #CelineDion as if she was the hat-check girl, and not seeming to realize how very amazing it was that Celine was standing there at all to present the #GRAMMYs to her, #grammyawards #thegrammys," tweeted @JulianH89.
Others noted how Dion has always acknowledged musical legends Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, and Sting. "remember when celine dion stopped her own backstage interview to listen to whitney houston’s performance?" asked @vlovesemma
"The irony that Celine Dion took a moment to acknowledge the legends Diana Ross & Sting who presented her the same award 27 YEARS AGO… this was not a good look Taylor, I’m sorry #Grammys," added @betty_most.
Dion making a surprise appearance at the Grammys is a massive deal, especially when she's been battling stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that has affected her ability to walk and sing. In May 2023, Dion announced she was canceling the remaining dates of her world tour.
But is it possible that people are taking it too far? Or are their complaints justified? In Swift's defense, recipients at award ceremonies usually have limited time for speeches, and the proceedings are tightly timed. She also seemed pretty distracted in the video. Dion and the "Anti-Hero" singer were photographed together backstage at the event, looking chummy. Maybe Swift acknowledged her then and thanked her. Who knows? All we get are snippets of celebrities' lives in the media, so it's hard to judge.
Regardless, we should celebrate the legend's comeback. "Thank you all. I love you right back," Dion responded to the cheering crowd at last night's event. She wore a pastel gown and brown coat, styled by Law Roach. She continued, "When I say that I’m happy to be here, I really mean it from my heart."
Neither Swift nor Dion has addressed the criticism.
