Surrogacy Lets Pedophiles Take Advantage Of The System

What we see of surrogacy on social media and in the headlines seems harmless. We’re presented with perfectly serene pictures of couples holding a sleeping baby in their arms, grinning from ear to ear.

People congratulate them in the same way a mother might be congratulated after bringing her baby home from the hospital. But the closer you look at surrogacy, the easier it is to see that it’s an entirely flawed concept that doesn’t have the child’s best interests in mind.

Regardless of what kind of couple opts in for surrogacy, the whole process treats children as commodities. Surrogacy intentionally ignores the important, distinct roles of women and men in the lives of children, and furthermore, it allows babies to be traded transactionally, rather than basing a child and his mother on familial bonds. Regardless of how much people may want to diminish this fact, mothers and their children have a strong biological and physiological bond that cannot be fully explained by science. Surrogacy severs this bond, even if the surrogate is not biologically related to the child; this commercializes what should be a natural relationship. Surrogacy transforms what was once an unfortunate event – children being separated from their mothers due to uncontrollable circumstances – into a commonplace, financially driven occurrence.

Many people claim that those who oppose surrogacy oppose it because it is usually done for gay couples, but the source of surrogacy’s immorality comes from broader societal issues. It’s impossible to productively discuss the impact of surrogacy without criticizing the influence of capitalism that has resulted in the unchecked growth of the surrogacy industry, which has resulted in a complete lack of ethics.

People claim that surrogacy is no different from adoption, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Adoption fundamentally aims to serve the child's best interests, often rescuing them from adverse situations and providing a nurturing environment with loving parents. This contrasts with surrogacy, which prioritizes adult desires over a child's welfare. Adoption is a necessary response to the realities of a world where not all children can be raised by their biological parents. Surrogacy, on the other hand, creates a traumatic situation for the child in order to make adults happy.

Meanwhile, there is an increasing number of couples who wouldn’t have passed an adoption screening that end up with children through the process of surrogacy. Infamous YouTuber Shane Dawson is a prime example.

Pedophiles Can Easily Become Parents Through Surrogacy

Shane Dawson has been posting videos on YouTube since 2008, and he has more than 19 million subscribers. It’s astonishing to think about the fact that he hasn’t been canceled yet, considering his history. In 2020, there was a clip of Dawson pretending to masturbate in front of a poster of Willow Smith, who was only 11 years old at the time when she released her single “Why My Hair.” When people started talking about Shane's actions, Jaden Smith, Willow's brother, posted a since-deleted tweet on Twitter, "SHANE DAWSON I AM DISGUSTED BY YOU. YOU SEXUALIZING AN 11 YEAR OLD GIRL WHO HAPPENS TO BE MY SISTER!!!!!!  IS THE FURTHEST THING FROM FUNNY AND NOT OKAY IN THE SLIGHTEST BIT." Even her mother, Jada Pinkett Smith, wrote, "To Shane Dawson ... I’m done with the excuses."

A few years later, Dawson talked about a conversation he had with a 6-year-old who was apparently a fan of his. In an episode of “Shane and Friends,” he said he thought the child was attractive. “She shows me her Instagram, and first of all, I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this, but she was kind of sexy,” he said. Dawson’s co-host tried to shut down the comment, but then Shane doubled down and attempted to defend pedophilia as a "fetish."

“Having sex with children or touching children is terrible, and you should not do it," he responded. "But, here’s my thing – people have foot fetishes. People have fetishes about everything.” At another time, he admitted publicly to searching for child pornography online, even typing the phrase “naked baby” into the search bar. In 2018, he made an apology video, but there were still no consequences for his words, and things were only about to get worse.

Twitter user @belugasong collected a large amount of evidence to expose Dawson on Twitter. In one clip, he was video chatting with a young teenager, and he kept telling her to twerk and "show herself."

Dawson also jokes about raping girls, and he was even caught in an audio clip laughing at the fact that a 4-month-old baby was raped. “Amazing!” he delighted. There are even two videos of Dawson sexualizing minors in person, asking them to do lewd acts on camera and lap dance for him. He asked them inappropriate questions about their genitals and tried to get a young girl to “breastfeed” off another woman’s chest.

Shane Dawson has admitted to searching for child pornography before, and somehow, he ends up with two children via surrogacy.

It’s shocking that this is Dawson’s history – and this is only what we know. It’s safe to assume that he has said many other unsavory things in the past that are pedophilic in nature. The man has admitted to searching for child pornography before, and somehow, he ends up with two children via surrogacy along with his husband, YouTuber Ryland Adams. Surrogacy makes it simple for men like Dawson to become parents. You don’t need to pass any welfare checks or even fill out any paperwork that you would have to do in the process of adoption. All you have to do is hand over enough money to create some embryos via IVF and hire a woman to carry the baby for you. This means any pedophile can take advantage of the system and purchase a child to go home with, regardless of his or her past. This should concern us all, as it puts children in serious danger – in their own home, of all places.

Of course, there are children out there who, sadly, experience abuse and neglect at the hands of their biological parents, but just because these tragic things occur doesn’t mean that we should simply allow men with a history of pedophilic words to take home two babies in the blink of an eye. We should do everything we can to stop these manufactured situations from happening, while also doing our best to correct situations of abuse in the homes of biological parents and children.

Surrogacy Can Impair the Emotional Bond Between Parent and Child

Surrogacy harms children in other ways, even if they don’t go home with disgusting men like Dawson. Khloe Kardashian recently spoke about the differing experiences she had with her children, True and Tatum. She faced challenges in bonding with her son, Tatum, who was born via surrogate in July 2022. This process was starkly different from her immediate connection with her daughter, True. Khloe, feeling guilty, questioned why the bonding with Tatum was not as instantaneous. She attributed this difference to Tatum's surrogacy birth, describing the experience as more "transactional" and lacking the emotional immediacy of traditional pregnancy. This sentiment was echoed by Khloe's sister, Kim Kardashian, who has also undergone both natural childbirth and surrogacy. Kim suggested that the physical connection during pregnancy might play a crucial role in emotional bonding with the child.

Furthermore, Lance Bass, who has twins with his husband through surrogacy, shared a similar experience. He admitted to struggling with connecting to his children in their first year. These personal revelations by celebrities like Khloe Kardashian and Lance Bass highlight the emotional complexities surrounding surrogacy. If they have struggled this much to connect with these children, imagine how difficult it is for the babies.

Closing Thoughts

This is not about depriving adults of becoming parents; this is about protecting children and putting their well-being over the desires of adults. Surrogacy doesn’t allow for children to be put first, and it should frighten us all that any person off the street (no matter their background with children) with enough money can bring an innocent baby home.
