After a long COVID-induced delay, Disney’s live-action origin story about Cruella de Vil is finally coming! Disney dropped the trailer today.
Set in 1970s London amid the punk rock revolution, Disney’s Cruella tells the story of the early, rebellious days of a clever, creative grifter Estella de Vil (Emma Stone). While Estella is trying to break into the fashion industry, ruled by the chic and high-brow fashion legend Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), she befriends two young thieves. Estella’s relationship with the Baroness leads her to embrace her wicked side, transforming her into the Cruella de Vil we know from 101 Dalmatians. Cruella says in the trailer she was “born brilliant, born bad, and a little bit mad.”
Mark Strong, Paul Walter Hauser, Joel Fry, Emily Beechum, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste round out the cast.
The costumes are sure to dazzle with two-time Oscar-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan at the helm. (I mean, Cruella burns off her coat to reveal a stunning red dress — talk about making an impression with your clothing!)
Cruella is set to open in theaters on May 28, 2021.
