Her music does cover themes of loneliness, depression, and feeling trapped. The novel's heroine strongly rejects the consumerism of midcentury America, and Eilish freely lets us know her feelings about consumerism. The heroine grapples with conventional gender roles. And self-admittedly, so does Billie. Undeniably, there are strong parallels between Eilish and Esther Greenwood, but can she bring the character to life? We've seen previous singers strike breakout acting successes, like Lady Gaga in A Star Is Born or Jennifer Hudson's Oscar-winning role in Dreamgirls . This is Billie's moment to shine, and hopefully, she's able to pull it off. I can't think of The Bell Jar without it evoking images of Sarah Lawrence or Smith College students sitting on grassy knolls and reading passages aloud to one another. For anyone seeking prototypical women's lit, there's no better place to start than here. But just because we know this book motivates gender studies majors, can it fill seats with general audiences in theaters coast to coast? I'm not so sure. Bad Guy The movie could work because there are still genuine points of connection between Esther Greenwood and women today: the pressure to "have it all," the impossible standards of success, and the feeling that every choice comes at a cost. My concern is that the adaptation could miss those relatable, human tensions in favor of a more obvious, male-bashing, politically overdetermined version, turning a psychologically complicated novel into a bloated lesson about the patriarchy. That approach may have had an unusually receptive audience in 2017, when The Handmaid's Tale TV series arrived alongside the Women's March, with thousands of women in pink, vagina-like hats. But that movement was directly motivated by the 2016 election of President Trump. Ten years into Trump's political era, that cultural charge is dulled. Ultimately, this movie has a few things working against it. It has a completely green leading actress, no cultural moment, and audiences who are already exhausted with woke culture. Behind the Times Billie Eilish is an interesting gamble, though the bigger one is Sarah Polley, who's writing and directing. If Polley can strip away politics and let Esther's struggle feel intimate, recognizable, and human, then The Bell Jar could find a new audience. And Billie could emerge as a legitimate screen star in the process. But if the film mistakes Plath's portrait for a 2026 manifesto about men and patriarchy, it may discover that what served as a cultural lightning rod in 2017 no longer works a decade later. We're eager to see gripping movies about women's struggles, not another rehashed political diatribe. Billie doesn't control that choice, but she does control whether Esther comes across as a person or an argument, and how she talks about the film once it's out. This has all the potential to be a success. And it is Billie's moment. But will she claim it?
