Sarah Michelle Gellar Reveals Her Secret To Long Lasting Marriage
Sarah Michelle Gellar’s marriage tip is not what you'd expect.

Sarah Michelle Gellar has been married to Freddie Prinze Jr. for over two decades.
So naturally, when she showed up on Today With Jenna and Friends, the question of how she’s kept her marriage intact came up. Her answer was simple. “Separate bathrooms!” Gellar told Jenna Bush Hager and Tiffany Haddish.
Hager, clearly stunned by the lack of fluff, shot back, “That’s it? It’s that simple?”
“It’s that simple,” Gellar repeated.
Tiffany Haddish, never one to miss a punchline, chimed in with a reference to I Love Lucy: “See, I was thinking it was like the [‘I Love Lucy’] thing where [Lucy and Ricky had] twin beds, and then when y’all want to get together you push them together, and when you want to be apart, you push them apart.”
Gellar laughed. She “had not thought of that,” but called it “actually a really good idea.”
She’s been floating this bathroom theory for a while now. Back in 2017 on Harry, she said, “I feel like there are certain things that should just be kept your own, and they never need to know.” She added, “Also, maybe, possibly a separate shopping credit card? Or if you're a guy, maybe a separate gaming card, so I don't have to see how much video games cost.”
Sarah and Freddie first met on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1997. They didn’t start dating until 2000, got married two years later in Mexico, and now they’ve got two kids, Charlotte, 15, and Rocky, 12.
In a December 2024 interview with Fox News Digital, Gellar said, “Everything takes work in you, whether it's a friendship or a work relationship or a marriage.” She followed that up with, “You have to put the work in, and we live in an extremely disposable society now. Your phone breaks, you don't fix it. You get a new one, and I think that's a lot of the attitude toward relationships.”
Freddie even went on The Howard Stern Show before they tied the knot and made a bet that his marriage to Gellar would last. Stern, always the cynic, basically laughed it off. Two decades later, Gellar proved him wrong. On their 20th anniversary, she uploaded screenshots from that old interview and tagged Stern, writing, “@SternShow, I think you owe us.”
