If You Scored Mostly 1s

Your album of the summer should either be Sabrina Carpenter’s Emails I Can’t Send Fwd: or Ariana Grande’s eternal sunshine. Carpenter’s 2023 fifth studio album is loosely based on the idea of drafted messages to a previous lover that she never sent. It’s honest, vulnerable, and passionate but upbeat with hints of sensuality. At its core, Emails I Can’t Send Fwd: is a breakup album about toxic relationships (or situationships), miscommunications, and enduring others’ judgments, as heard in “Vicious” and “because I liked a boy.” But it also features tracks that glorify growing from heartbreak, namely the hit song “Feather.”

Grande’s eternal sunshine, which is loosely based on the artist’s personal love life, is also about finding yourself again after a breakup and then learning to love someone new. The “thank you, next” singer married Dalton Gomez in 2021 and split up with him less than two years later. As the media has reported obsessively, Grande is now dating Wicked co-star Ethan Slater, controversial due to him divorcing his pregnant wife for the popstar. Eternal sunshine has songs about heartbreak, confusing relationship status, and then falling in love. It’s perfect for the girls who need a perspective shift on love and how to understand that losing someone toxic in your life is not a true loss.

Your album of the summer should be either Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department or Dean Lewis’ The Hardest Love. You may have recently gone through a tumultuous heartbreak or have been self-reflecting and struggling to grapple with how others perceive you – or maybe you just enjoy deeply emotional indie-pop.

TTPD, Swift’s 11th studio album, consisting of 31 tracks, occupied the Billboard Hot 100 charts top 14 slots within a week of its release. To say that it has struck a chord with fans is an understatement. In reality, there is a song on this album for every mood and nearly every music taste, but its themes of heart-wrenching loss, betrayal, and self-growth are clear in “loml,” “So Long, London,” “The Black Dog,'' and “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.” The album also has some amazingly energetic, tongue-in-cheek tracks like “But Daddy I Love Him” and “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” that can make for great summer soundtracks.

Dean Lewis’ alternative The Hardest Love is described as a “time capsule” that helps both the audience and the artist who created the work to cope with life’s hardships. It’s not just any old breakup album, it’s an album that assigns new meaning to what it feels like to lose someone – either a romantic interest, a friend, or a parent. Lewis’ album is raw, tear-jerking, and brutally honest, but the tracks aren’t necessarily slow and melancholic, they have energy that radiates strength and growth.

If You Scored Mostly 3s

Your album should either be Kylie Minogue’s Extension or Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism. Completely unlike the above albums, Extensions and Radical Optimism will not get you in your feels. The techno, psychedelic-pop sounds of these albums will get you in a vibrant, jazzy mood that will have you dancing all summer long with a smile on your face. Extensions has nods to falling in love carelessly, as heard in “Things We Do For Love” and “You Still Get Me High.” Radical Optimism is a bit more complex and mysterious, like its creator herself, but it has lessons on falling in and out of love while appreciating where you are in your life. Like the album title suggests, each track will put you in a wildly positive mood.

If You Scored Mostly 4s

The albums you need to have on repeat are Kacey Musgraves’ Deeper Well and Norah Jones’ Visions. Both albums have themes of growth, self-love, nature, and peace.

Jones’ Visions somehow transcends the boundaries of genre and encompasses elements of pop, folk, jazz, blues, and country. Her voice is soothing yet interesting, and the artful musicality of each track on this album matches it. Musgraves’ 2024 album Deeper Well similarly blurs the lines of genre and spans across country, pop, and folk music. This uplifting album contains tracks that touch on lessons of growth, curiosity, appreciation of nature, and self-love. Both albums feel like an escape from day-to-day life because their illustrative beauty is so ethereal, it’s almost other-worldly. If you’re looking to bring relaxation and inspiration to your summer, give these a listen.

If You Scored Mostly 5s

Your album of the summer is Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter. You’re probably seeking adventure, new experiences, or maybe even an entirely new identity. Let this album be the hype music you need to step outside your comfort zone, like Beyoncé herself has done with her latest work of art. Cowboy Carter is deeply rooted in themes of religion and black musicality, with threads of family, faith, and freedom intertwined in many of its songs. The album has been regarded as a symbol of strength and progress, which makes it the perfect soundtrack for a woman with a pioneering personality.
