Olivia Wilde Finally Talks About Her Relationship With Harry Styles: "We Go Out Of Our Way To Protect Our Relationship"
"Don't Worry Darling" is Olivia Wilde's latest project and it's the second film she has directed. She recently opened up about the work it took to make the movie as well as her private relationship with Harry Styles.

Olivia Wilde has had a diverse career so far in roles such as the popular show House and the movie Her. But she's turned her sight to directing now. Don't Worry Darling is set to release on September 5 at the Venice Film Festival. She talked to Variety about the work that it took to create this film while also giving some insight into her personal life.
Olivia Wilde Finally Talks about Her Relationship with Harry Styles: "We Go out of our Way to Protect Our Relationship"
The whole world has speculated for a while that Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles were together, and although they have never officially confirmed their relationship is real, they have certainly said enough to make it known now that they're a couple.
“I’m not going to say anything about it because I’ve never seen a relationship benefit from being dragged into the public arena,” she said. “We both go out of our way to protect our relationship; I think it’s out of experience, but also just out of deep love."
She talked about how society would benefit greatly if "we would all disengage from a cycle of bullying and hatred." Olivia says this originates from the idea of the nuclear family that was traditionally led by the father, which she believes is a misogynistic system created to control and suppress women.
"We’ve just lost empathy, and we just don’t give people the benefit of the doubt — specifically women. We just assume the worst from women, and I don’t know why," she said.
She also talks about her divorce with Jason Sudeikis, with whom she has two children. Olivia claims her privacy was violated and she was judged far too harshly for leaving Jason.
“The last two years, my family has gone through this kind of restructuring and a revolution that should be a totally personal experience,” she continued. “And it’s not. The most painful element of it has been women shaming me for making a decision that was for my own health and happiness.”
She also points to a double standard of how people judge her for dating Harry, 10 years her junior, and not being with her kids enough, while a father would be praised every time he's seen spending time with his children.
Olivia Wilde Says It's "Harder for Women" to Become a Successful Director
Olivia's directorial debut was the film Booksmart, but she says she's "so lucky" to land Don't Worry Darling because it's not easy for women to become successful directors in Hollywood.
“It’s harder for women to get a second chance at directing,” she said. “Fewer people will invest in the second film of a woman than a man. I was so lucky. My movie didn’t make a billion dollars. It struck enough of a nerve of the cultural zeitgeist that I was allowed to have another opportunity. I really feel, at this point, that I have earned the right to say I’m a director."
She said this project was actually born when President Trump was elected. “I was looking for a way to tell a story about what happens when someone is willing to sacrifice a system that serves them in order to do the right thing," she said. "I was also thinking a lot about my place in society as someone who could rage against the patriarchy but in many ways totally benefits from it.”
Olivia chose to go with a science-fiction film because it "has a long history in film of allowing for political issues to be spoken out through entertaining narratives." She didn't want a story that would "oversimplify feminism" and definitely didn't want her next film to be "preachy."
Although she was set to play the lead originally, she met with Florence Pugh (after seeing her stellar performance in Midsommar) and quickly decided that she was right for the part. She called Florence "extraordinary" and "the most exciting young actress working today."
You can catch Don't Worry Darling in theaters on September 23.
