But that is a very different thing than making a martyr out of her and participating in a huge online movement in which women prop her up as a representative for mothers everywhere. Zarutska had fled Ukraine with her family following Russia's invasion and was building a life for herself in the United States. Surveillance footage showed her sitting in front of a stranger, career criminal Decarlos Brown Jr., who attacked her from behind without warning, stabbing her three times. She bled out alone, with no help from any bystanders, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Brown was arrested on the train platform and charged with first-degree murder, along with a federal mass-transit violence offense . Authorities have not identified a personal connection or motive; it was nothing more than a random act of violence against a beautiful, innocent woman. This story went viral last year, not because feminists everywhere were outraged and demanded justice. Not because actors and celebrities brought awareness to the crime, like they do with issues they claim to be passionate about. It went viral because citizens and independent journalists would not let the story die. We all expressed outrage and horror over this murder, partly due to the fact that Brown was roaming free even though he had been convicted of three felonies and had proven that he was a violent individual. But because so-called progressive judges and prosecutors believe that repeat offenders should be rehabilitated rather than properly punished, he was free to violently kill Iryna on a train. Iryna would have been the perfect victim to choose as the representative for young women everywhere. She was beautiful, vibrant, and working hard to build a life for herself after fleeing a war-torn country. She did nothing wrong. She was commuting home and minding her own business. She really could have been any of us. All of the women who weep publicly for Lindsay and defend her actions had nothing to say about Iryna. But all of the women who weep publicly for Lindsay and defend her actions had nothing to say about Iryna. They refused to stand in solidarity with her because it meant they would have to make a black man the villain, even though he was a sick murderer. It didn't fit their narrative, and so they ignored the death of a woman who actually deserved our support and grief. We live in such a backwards world that a young, innocent woman like Iryna is forgotten while a mother who strangled her own children is given a whole movement of undying support. It feels more and more like our society is upside down, where right is wrong and wrong is right. A judge recently deemed Iryna's murderer incompetent to stand trial ; instead of being sent to prison for his brutal crime, the judge ordered that he spend four months in a prison medical facility to restore his competency. Why is it that Decarlos Brown and Lindsay Clancy receive more empathy and compassion from the public and the legal system than Iryna Zarutska and the Clancy children who were strangled to death? The women who wore pink and screamed in support of Lindsay didn't protest on behalf of Iryna, and that's because they could not care less about women who are real victims of violence or neglect. They only care about the popular trends that sweep TikTok, the ones that they can participate in to make it look like they care. But at the end of the day, appearance is the only thing that matters to them. The women who are actually harmed and killed don't even cross their mind.
