Netflix's Little House on the Prairie Is the Most Pro-American Show in Years

I sat down for Netflix's new adaptation, bracing myself. I remained hopeful, but I gave it good odds of being a woke adaptation, and of all stories, this would have been the most inappropriate one for it. This book earned its spot as an American classic because it captures a particular moment, place, and people in American history, and not all of that history is flattering. Hollywood has been making adaptations that fit today's politics more than the text itself. Netflix's Little House on the Prairie is not one of them. One of the meanest lines in the books appears in the first one, when the Ingalls' neighbor says, "The only good Indian is a dead Indian." Laura Ingalls Wilder didn't invent that sentiment. She recorded it, as something typical of the setting and worth noting. Charles Ingalls disagrees with the man who says it, telling him Indians would be peaceable enough if left alone. But the line was already loose in the world. It followed the Ingalls family into every retelling since, like a debt that never gets fully paid off. In 2018, the American Library Association even stripped Wilder's name from its own children's literature award over passages like it. Hollywood has been making adaptations that fit today's politics more than the text itself. Netflix's Little House on the Prairie is not one of them. The show cuts that specific line without erasing the tension it points to. The Ingalls and the Osage families whose land they've settled on stay in real conflict all season. That land sits right outside a town called Independence, a fitting name: pioneers moved west to get away from the government and build a life on their own terms. This is where the plot lives, as the family and their fellow pioneers keep pushing to build the life they came for. Nonetheless, they never intended to move as nomadic people; instead, they were families looking for one particular patch of prairie to call home. The '70s show left out the best parts In 1972, NBC executive and producer Ed Friendly bought the rights to the story. Two years later it aired as a two-hour pilot movie on NBC, and the series it launched ran for nine seasons. That version rushed the family through Independence and focused on their next town, Walnut Grove. The Netflix version stays in Independence through the first season (hoping for a second!) and gives more room to Dr. George Tann , the Black doctor who saved the Ingalls family from malaria and whom the '70s series dropped entirely. Tann was as real as Laura Ingalls herself. He treated the family in 1870, and Wilder wrote him into her book, perhaps as a show of gratitude for saving the family. The Netflix series also gives Osage characters names and a real say in what happens to them, instead of treating them as supporting cast for a pioneer story. At one point Mr. Edwards tells the Osage plainly, "I would never give up this land if I was them." It's a level of empathy the book never gave its Osage characters. That's a creative liberty, and it works: it lifts these characters off the page and makes them people instead of scenery. Netflix does this better than both the book and the '70s series, without losing the spirit of Wilder's work. Where the show does soften things is in the relationships themselves. It gives the Ingalls an Osage friendship that doesn't fit the history, since it skips past the distrust the actual massacres between the Osage and settlers had earned. Both the book and the historical record support moments of mutual understanding, but a friendship is a stretch. Netflix's goal here seems less about strict accuracy than about making the Ingalls people we want to learn from and travel with, people we morally admire for their inclusivity. But this just comes across as inaccurate to its history and literature. This new adaptation leans into the romanticized version of the Ingalls' story and invites us to feel like family, a connection that only works if we actually want to be like them. While those matters of race were softened, other matters were taken more seriously, mainly Mr. Edwards' alcoholism. The '70s show and the book were made mostly (but not totally) for children who weren't expected to grasp this, but the Netflix version shows us a broken man, not a mean villain. We learn about his war trauma and how losing his family made it worse. We see his pain and why he drinks, and the show never uses it to write him off. It's another gesture that makes an already beloved character more real and more human. The trad-wife ideal, without the propaganda Caroline puts her family first and is clearly depicted as a traditional, fully devoted wife, and the show never treats that as something to apologize for. But it doesn't pretend that putting family first means she doesn't work, or that her work at home has no value. There's something most takes on this topic, from either side, miss: work doesn't stop being work when no one's cutting you a paycheck for it. When the family needs a second income, Caroline tries to find a job teaching. Her worth was never in question in this show, whether she was raising her daughters at home or teaching to help keep the family afloat. That's a more honest take on tradition than either side of that debate usually manages. And on the matter of women, the show’s fashion is both impeccable and historically accurate. This is not only pleasing to the eye, but also clear proof of the great effort the production took to achieve historical accuracy and neglect stereotypes or overtly romanticized fashions, something the '70s show does constantly. The government was always the villain This is a clearly political story, and I feared Netflix would flatten those politics into its usual framing. It didn't. The story has been libertarian since the first book: even with constant conflict between the Osage and the pioneers, the government is the real villain all along. Pamphlets promising free, fertile land lure the pioneers west in the first place, part of a railroad scheme designed to push settlers onto Osage land and clear ground for track. The government enforces its own laws on that same territory anyway, which the pioneers read as exactly the abuse of power they'd moved west to escape. And once they've struck a deal with the Osage and the land is finally theirs, Washington decides the Homestead Act doesn't quite cover this parcel after all. The free land comes with a bill, and the real estate windfall they'd hoped for turns out to be good business for the government, not for them. Two betrayals, stacked on top of each other, each one sold as a chance at prosperity. The pioneers never expected the government to provide security for them. They came for opportunity and peace on their own terms. Netflix keeps the indictment the story has always centered on: you cannot outsource your survival to people who only make promises on paper. That was the pioneers' view, and even if you don't share these libertarian instincts, the book makes a clear case for them. I feared Netflix would turn the Ingalls into apologists for their own politics, or make their pursuit of a home on the prairie look foolish. Instead, the Ingalls stay stubborn, hardworking people who build a house out of sod and a life out of nothing, and the writers respect that as much as they respect the people whose land it is. And it all looks so beautiful and human. It's aspirational and real at the same time, and the reason this adaptation works. It stays true to the story while still connecting with a modern audience. Why this adaptation is worth your time When tragedy hits at the show's finale, there is no bureaucrat at the door offering relief and no institution to appeal to. The Ingalls rely on themselves and the friendships they've made along the way, and they do what they're known for: hitch the wagon and go farther west, again putting distance between themselves and the government's reach. This isn't a defeat or a sad ending. It's the thing this family, and pioneers in general, are good at and proud of. It’s their American Dream. That's what makes Caroline's line in the finale the best sentence of the season, and maybe the show's whole thesis. Facing the loss of everything they've worked to build, she says, "I like who we are here. We came here to be the best versions of ourselves, and we did that. We can do it again." Little House on the Prairie may revolve around building a home, but it isn't a real estate venture. It's an effort to live in freedom and independence that has nothing to do with the material thing itself. It’s their American Dream. In some places, Netflix plays it safe and manages to escape the book's controversies and its uglier moments, but safe isn't the same as dishonest, and I went in expecting the second one. What I got instead was a family that holds on to its values and, despite every hardship, still believes in building something out of nothing, still distrusts a government that promises more than it delivers, and still chooses the horizon over a comfortable lie. The book gave us a family that lived through its era's cruelty. The 1974 series gave us more of a comfort watch. Netflix finally gave us both, and trusted the audience to face the plot's realities the way Wilder's own family did. That's what makes this adaptation worth your time.
