Ne-Yo Defends His Statements About Gender Identity And Says He Will "Never Be Okay" With Parents Transitioning Kids
Ne-Yo issued a formal apology on Sunday, but it seems like he is doubling down on his original opinion about parents who help their children "change" their gender.

Speaking with Gloria Velez on VladTV, hip-hop sensation Ne-Yo expressed admiration for the LGBTQ community, but his subsequent statements revealed a more traditional stance on gender. He questioned parents' roles in affirming their kids' desire to "transition," especially at a young age. He commented on his upbringing, stating he grew up in a time where "men were men and women were women." Furthermore, he criticized some policies in California, which could result in parents losing custody if they disagreed with a child's gender transition decision.
Despite Ne-Yo's global influence, his remarks were viewed by some as oversimplifying gender complexities. While some applauded his forthrightness, many found his comments insensitive. In response, Ne-Yo issued an official apology on his Twitter, acknowledging the supposed nuance of gender identity and expressing a commitment to educating himself more on the topic. He affirmed his longstanding support for the LGBTQI+ community and recognized his comments' potential harm. However, he clarified his statements on his Instagram page on Monday and refused to be silenced over his personal opinions.
Ne-Yo Defends His Statements About Gender Identity
After going viral for two days, Ne-Yo decided to set the record straight. He wrote in the caption of his video that this situation was "getting out of hand," so he wanted to share a message "from the horse's mouth.
"I will not be bullied into apologizing for having an opinion," he wrote. "Agreeing to disagree is not a declaration of war." Ne-Yo acknowledges that he's not perfect and he's made his fair share of mistakes, but he never meant to offend anybody. However, that doesn't mean he shouldn't be entitled to his own opinion.
"First and foremost, I do not apologize for having an opinion on this matter," he stated in the video. "I am a 43-year-old heterosexual man raising five boys and two girls. That's my reality."
He didn't ask anyone to agree with him; he simply answered the question he was asked. He said he has "no beef" with the LGBT community, urging them to do whatever they want to do with their lives. But that doesn't change how he feels: "I will never be okay with allowing a child to make a decision that detrimental to their life." Even though Ne-Yo plans to educate himself further on the matter, he doubts there is any book or opinion out there that will result in his approval of children being transitioned.
"If I get canceled for this, maybe this is a world where they don't need a Ne-Yo no more," he continued. "I got no problem with that."
Many people were thrilled to see that he didn't back down in this video, even though it was a stark departure from the public apology he made just one day before. This makes many people think that this apology was simply written by his PR agent, not by him. Ne-Yo did what most other celebrities didn't have the backbone to do: double down on his original thoughts and refuse to back down to the mob. And he did it in a fairly diplomatic way. He encouraged people to continue living their own lives, but he refused to be chastised or silenced for having his own opinion.
"Live how you want to live, love how you want to love," Ne-Yo concluded. "But your opinion is yours. Speak your opinion as much as you damn well feel like. I'm entitled to mine."
Because of the polarized place our society is in now, this is considered a big win. Seeing Ne-Yo stand up for children and proudly say that he disagrees with gender theory being pushed onto kids will have a bigger impact than you might think. It will force many of his fans to confront the opinions they have about gender identity and perhaps inquire as to why he finds it to be insidious. He may be getting dragged in the headlines and he may be canceled, but it looks like he would rather sacrifice his career than go back on his principles. That is something to applaud.
