The store responded Art of Play’s first substantive response identified the object at the center of the dispute as Molly, a singing and dancing bird automaton used in the shop’s magic shows. The store said Molly was permanently attached to the wall and unavailable for purchase. It also emphasized that visitors were welcome whether they bought anything or simply spent time enjoying its puzzles, games, and toys. The statement acknowledged that Clarkson’s description would resonate with people who had felt judged while shopping. Then it turned to the scale of the backlash, describing the business as having been attacked by 8 million people who had never visited. The statement ended by expressing hope that things could eventually be cleared up with Clarkson and referencing her song Stronger .
