Jane Eyre Has the Most Misunderstood Happy Ending in Literature

Her fate feels ill-deserved, and even unhappy, by modern standards. To Jane, it was a triumph of love and conscience. And the fruits of her convictions offer a profound commentary on the symbiotic relationship between happiness and virtue. I reread Jane Eyre recently, after abandoning the book in disgust as a teenager. The timing of this revisit proved serendipitous. As I explored the inner workings of Jane’s mind, I was becoming similarly acquainted with Archbishop Fulton Sheen —a prominent Catholic televangelist whom the Catholic Church is preparing to beatify in a special ceremony in St. Louis this week. Put simply for non-Catholic readers, “beatification” means that Sheen is one step away from becoming a Catholic saint. What could a 1950s television star and Catholic archbishop have in common with a fictional woman? The answer can be found in one of my favorite Sheen quotes : “The level of any civilization is the level of its womanhood. When a man loves a woman, he has to become worthy of her. The higher her virtue, the more noble her character, the more devoted she is to truth, justice, goodness, the more a man has to aspire to be worthy of her. The history of civilization could actually be written in terms of the level of its women.” As I read Jane’s story a second time, what I initially perceived as a tragic novel about despair, and a doomed marriage, instead proved to be a beautiful commentary on the virtue that Sheen believed was necessary for a durable society. If he were alive today, Sheen would remind Gen Z women that true happiness cannot exist in the absence of conscience. As Jane Eyre so powerfully shows, the moral guardrails that the Church and the natural law impress on every human being’s heart do not “cage” us—they are often how our hearts are truly set free. True happiness cannot exist in the absence of conscience. For context, the character Jane is an impoverished orphan who escapes a loveless childhood to work as a governess for the ward of a wealthy man named Mr. Rochester. Jane and Mr. Rochester fall deeply in love. Unbeknownst to Jane, however, Mr. Rochester has a psychotic wife whom he keeps locked away. This horrifying truth is revealed mere moments before Jane nearly achieves her greatest desire: marriage to Mr. Rochester. Despite his protestations that she abandon her principles, Jane realizes she will never be happy choosing a life she morally disagrees with. Envisioning the long-term consequences of abandoning her convictions, Jane literally flees temptation with a broken heart. “I will respect myself,” Jane says. “I will keep the law given by God; sanctioned by man… Laws and principles are not for the times when there is no temptation: they are for such moments as this, when body and soul rise in mutiny against their rigor.” Jane’s steadfast self-respect and integrity stand in stark contrast to the messages targeting women today in pop culture, social media, TV shows, and media. Gen Z women are inundated with the lie that abandoning God’s law and indulging every biological urge will set us free. Instead, it has left many of us anxious, unmoored, and starving for the very things we were told to postpone or reject : marriage , family, faith . Jane Eyre knew something we’ve forgotten—that fidelity to conscience, even when it costs us everything in the moment, is essential for lasting love and happiness. Today, marriage and motherhood are two of the largest predictors of female happiness , across all religious and political groups. As women, we should not be afraid to want and defend what makes us happy. And as Sheen reminds us, it is the values shaping our behavior—integrity, self-respect, conscientiousness—that set the standard for our society. In other words, Gen Z needs more conviction, not less. In Jane Eyre’s case, clinging to virtue nearly cost Jane her life. Homeless and penniless, she nearly dies of starvation. Jane’s perseverance is ultimately rewarded by the fortune that a previously unknown relative left her. Meanwhile, Mr. Rochester’s disturbed wife burns his mansion to the ground in the night and kills herself. Mr. Rochester loses his vision, and one of his hands, trying to rescue his wife and servants from the flames. A now-wealthy Jane returns to find her lover blind, maimed, and repentant. What Brontë’s character demonstrates is the power of women’s own values to shape their destiny, and the world around them. Mr. Rochester admits to Jane that his sufferings helped him “wish for reconcilement to my Maker.” By maintaining her integrity, and holding Mr. Rochester to the same standard, Jane ultimately helped bring him back to a relationship with God. The two can finally marry. And rather than the cheap, selfish love Mr. Rochester initially offered, Jane experiences the bliss of love rooted in faith. Jane’s elevation of Mr. Rochester should not be misunderstood. Women are not responsible for healing men of poor character, nor should they be burdened with the task of rehabilitating an abuser, a cheat, or an all-around scoundrel. Yet what Brontë’s character demonstrates is the power of women’s own values to shape their destiny, and the world around them. Refusing to sacrifice your self-respect or lower your standards gives you the best chance of quality love and partnership—the essential ingredients of a happy marriage. That is Sheen’s real message to Gen Z women, and it is Jane’s too: virtue is not a cage. It is the thing that makes us worth pursuing, and it is the thing that will determine, as it always has, the level of our civilization.
