Cusk’s slim experimental novel Life of M centers on a writer who sets out to write the autobiography of an internationally famous actress called “M.” The story begins with the actress welcoming the idea. By the end, M tells the writer she does not like how she has been shown. She feels the portrait makes her seem unable to love or connect with people.
