During a fever in episode four, delirious and afraid, she dreams her way back to her childhood home, where Eliza tells her she's finally made the right decision by leaving Charles behind. Caroline wakes up in shock and chooses the prairie anyway. Again and again, no matter what, she chooses Charles. But this isn't blind loyalty. Charles has earned her trust, and inevitably, love follows. There is no gunfight, no chase, no mysterious staredown at the saloon. His heroics are gentler and more consistent, and I'd argue that makes them more powerful, not less. Then he talks her through the labor itself, coaching her breathing, telling her a story about a cousin born early and healthy just to give her mind somewhere to go besides fear: "You're all right. You're doing great. Just breathe." It's the most physically and emotionally demanding scene he's given all season, and while filled with tension, he never once raises his voice.
