Picture this. It's the middle of a snowstorm, there's no doctor for miles, and Caroline Ingalls is in labor a month early. "I've never done this without my sisters," she sobs. "I've never done this alone." Her husband doesn't leave to find help, because there is no help to find, and he knows he is all the help she has. So he kneels beside her, holds her hand, and they get through it.
