"Mr. Perfectly Fine" Joe Jonas is having difficulty getting the public to side with him amidst the news of his divorce from Sophie Turner. Here's why.

I guess it really is the year of celebrity divorces. Sophie Turner, 27, and Joe Jonas, 34, were first spotted together in 2016 after a group photo including both of them was uploaded to Instagram. That same year, the duo was seen engaging in PDA, and by December, their relationship appeared official. “They’re dating exclusively. He was playing the field, but he really likes her and is willing to settle down for her," one source told People at the time.

After one year together, the couple announced their engagement on Instagram but didn't tie the knot until 2019. Unfortunately, after four years of marriage and welcoming two kids, Jonas and Turner are now calling it quits.

On September 3, 2023, TMZ announced that Jonas and Turner were heading for divorce. Their sources cited that they had been having "serious problems" for at least six months, adding that Jonas cared for their two kids "pretty much all the time," even while on tour. They further claim that sources alleged, "She [Turner] likes to party, he [Jonas] likes to stay at home. They have very different lifestyles."

The latest piece from TMZ says that an insider in direct contact with Jonas shared that “Joe had access to a ring cam that purportedly captured Sophie saying and/or doing something that made him realize the marriage was over.”

The Daily Mail appears to corroborate these statements, announcing that Turner reportedly felt confined in her relationship and regrets “missing out” on her youth after getting hitched and having two children at a young age, according to a “close friend.” While filming her upcoming series Joan, the actress enjoyed a night out at the arcade bar Dropshot Digbeth in Birmingham. However, this event is said to be the wrap party for the series – it’s not like she was randomly partying at a club with strangers. Let’s not forget the fact that we don’t know who these TMZ or DailyMail “sources” are – they could be a part of Joe’s PR team, or perhaps they’re not. And while the ex-couple themselves have confirmed their divorce, we don’t know exactly why they ended their marriage.

Nevertheless, here’s why people aren’t siding with Jonas.

Sophie Turner Is an “Introvert” and “Homebody”

Users on X and TikTok are recalling the time when the The Game of Thrones star said she was an introvert who loved the comfort of her own home.

In a resurfaced interview with Conan O'Brien in 2020, Turner opened up about how she and Jonas had contrasting outlooks on quarantining during the pandemic. "I'm an introvert, I'm a homebody," Turner revealed at the time. "If I could stay at home all day, I would, so this is great for me. I leave my house like once a day anyway to walk my dogs, and then that's it."

When talking about Jonas, she added, "Joe and I, everything seems to be working out in my favor here because Joe is a real social butterfly, and I struggle to lock him down and just spend time with me. It's like a prison for him, but it's great for me." Could it be that Jonas was the party animal instead?

Another video going viral on TikTok shows the husband and wife admitting that Turner is the “homebody” in the relationship.

People Believe “Mr. Perfectly Fine” Is about Joe Jonas

If you look at every video on Jonas and Turner’s divorce, I guarantee you’ll find at least one reference to Taylor Swift’s song “Mr. Perfectly Fine” in the comment section.

For the uninitiated, many believe this song – featured as a vault track on Fearless (Taylor's Version) –  is about the “Year 3000” singer. The bop was written in 2008 about a man who knows exactly what to say before T-Swift discovers "Mr. Change of Heart" and gets heartbroken by him. Fans believe that its lyrics hint at Jonas’ “real” personality, especially when it comes to this part: “So dignified in your well-pressed suit / So strategized, all the eyes on you / Sashay your way to your seat / It's the best seat, in the best room.” Sounds like a man who carefully crafts his public persona to me. It continues, “Oh, he's so smug, Mr. 'Always wins' / So far above me in every sense / So far above feeling anything.” In another line, Swift sings about "Mr. 'Insincere apology so he doesn't look like the bad guy.'"

What’s even more interesting is that Turner uploaded a photo of her wearing a bracelet given to her by fans that read “Mr. Perfectly Fine.”

Did Joe Jonas Give Sophie Turner a “Shut Up” Ring?

Perhaps one of the craziest theories so far is that Jonas supposedly gave Turner a “shut up” ring, which is when a man gives a ring to his girlfriend to stop her from talking about marriage and gain some extra time to think.

@ceciliaregina275 on TikTok reminded her audience that Turner and Jonas had a Vegas wedding with ring pops. Here's the kicker: Turner revealed in the past that she and Jonas broke up a day before getting hitched. "It was the worst day of our lives," she said. "For a second we both had cold feet, then 24 hours later, we were both, like, 'Never mind.'"

What Pop Culture Fans Are Saying

So far, the internet is siding with the Queen of the North. “this whole narrative his team is spinning is traaaaaaaash,” writes @boba_toes on a Reddit thread about the couple, “and tbh, if he was expecting her not to ever, god forbid, have fun or go anywhere without him and the kids, then yeah, she was trapped.”

"Stop running to TMZ every few hours Joe - they're now trying to spin it as she said something messed up on a Ring camera," adds @thenoctilucent. "Like why are you surveilling your wife's every move?"

"joe jonas letting his pr team run a smear campaign against the mother of his two children is wretched," tweets @sairaspooks.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner Break Their Silence

We’re probably not going to get the entire truth about their breakup (it’s Hollywood, after all), but Jonas and Turner have issued a statement on their Instagram account following all of these speculations. They say that they ended their romance “amicably.”

"After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage," it reads. "There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children."
