I'm 32 and Single. This Is What I've Learned.

"Trust the timing" or "when you know, you know" are offered up as solid evidence, but to those of us on the outside, these are abstract concepts we have no idea how to interpret or grasp. Trust me, I've heard it all, too. "Maybe if you stop wanting it, then it will come to you!" At this point in my life, I've heard every version of this advice, and I honestly don't know what to do with it anymore. I've watched friend after friend find a man and promise forever—a man they met at work, at church, in college, or at the grocery store. My luck has not materialized in the form of an office romance. The only single guys at my church are still in the youth group. Jury's still out on my grocery-store meet-cute. And don't get me started on online dating. I'm one more swiping session away from swearing it off forever. I really thought my life would be different. I really thought my life would be different from what I'm currently experiencing at 32. If things had gone according to my plan, I would be spending my days homeschooling my children, not organizing spreadsheets for someone else. I'd be sharing a bed with the man I love. I'd be leaning on my husband when things get hard. I'm the same age now as my mother was when I, her firstborn child, was 11. Yet here I am: no kids, a chaotic career path, and no "man I love" (outside of celebrity crushes) in sight. And I know I'm not the only woman who feels this way. The logistics of loneliness No one warned me that loneliness isn't just missing romance. Single homeownership on a single income is hard . Living alone means every broken appliance, every unexpected expense, and every financial decision belongs to you. Three years ago, I purchased my first home. Trying to balance a mortgage, utilities, and a car payment while still having something left over to travel, feed a pet, and enjoy my life is a full-time job in and of itself. It's hard to come home on a Tuesday night, carry the groceries inside by yourself, open the door for yourself, and have no one to greet you and ask about your day. Being the single friend in the group is hard as well. Having married friends can sometimes feel like I've lost a friend. Her life is no longer her own in the same sense that mine is, especially when kids enter the chat. A simple coffee run has become a major production for her. We're no longer in the same season—she's moved into a whole different realm, and I feel left behind. Sometimes, hanging out with her leads to feelings of envy and resentment, making it difficult to enjoy spending time with her. Churches often don't know what to do with you Churches often excel at serving families but unintentionally overlook adults whose lives don't fit that category. Many single women aren't asking to be pitied; they're asking to belong. The one place one would expect to be welcomed and accepted can be awkward at best, and painful at worst. Our demographic is grossly overlooked in the American church. We don't belong in the young marrieds group (obviously). We're too old for the young adult groups. It can be painful to spend Sunday mornings pouring into someone else's children while grieving the family you've always hoped to have. No one seems to know what to do with you. Sometimes you're made to feel that you're useful, of course, for childcare, for mentoring, and for serving in any capacity, because you have "nothing else going on." But outside of using your gifts, no one seems to know what to do with you. This leads to more loneliness and isolation, while unintended, I'm sure. But framing singleness as a "gift" is painful for those of us who so deeply desire marriage. Independence becomes your greatest strength… and your greatest fear No one tells you that after years of building a life on your own, marriage starts to feel both more desirable and more frightening. Having never had a romantic relationship, I find the idea of marriage both fantastic and terrifying. Yes, I'd have my "person," but I would also have to merge my entire life with someone else. I've got my routines, I've got my stuff, I've got my own house. I'm proud of my interests and quirks. What if a guy doesn't like any of that? Sometimes I wonder if the fact that, from the outside, it really doesn't look like I need a man—I'm a homeowner, I'm career-driven, and I'm financially stable—works against me. No one warned me that the independence I hold on to so tightly would be so difficult to surrender. After years of solving every problem alone, accepting help no longer comes naturally. At this point in my life, independence has stopped being just a strength and has instead become a sort of self-protection. Waiting changes what you look for At 22, I wanted chemistry, a man who would make me laugh and connect with me in Hollywood-esque ways. At 32, I want peace, a man who understands me and chooses me daily. I thought chemistry was compatibility, but now I know they're different. At 22, I wanted a handsome, charming boyfriend I could show off to my friends. At 32, I care more about his character than his looks. At 22, I was looking for someone who would solve all my problems. At 32, I'm looking for someone who can suffer with me. At 22, I wanted someone exciting. At 32, I want someone emotionally safe. Waiting didn't lower or raise my standards; it changed them completely. But herein is the blessing: the longer I've waited, the more I've learned about what I actually want in a man. Some of the qualities I found so attractive as a 22-year-old I now realize were either superficial or toxic, or both. I've learned what sustains a marriage before I've entered into it, something many cannot claim, having to learn on the job instead. Waiting didn't lower or raise my standards; it changed them completely. As I keep learning these things, I balance them with letting myself continue to hope. More than romance, I want partnership. I want someone who notices when I'm carrying too much before I have to ask. Someone whose presence brings peace instead of uncertainty. And I hope to offer him the same kind of safety in return. Waiting didn't make me want marriage less. It taught me what kind of marriage is worth waiting for. The biggest thing waiting changed wasn't my relationship status; it was me. Accepting reality Maybe I'll come home one Tuesday and it will still be quiet and empty. Maybe one Tuesday someone else will already be inside, ready to hug me and ask how my day was. Until then, I'll keep unlocking the door anyway. Not because I've stopped hoping, but because I've learned that a meaningful life doesn't have to be put on hold while I wait for someone else to walk through it.
