They need a lot of attention at this age and will feel the need to compete with your glowing pocket rectangle if they see it enough. Work happens on a schedule; motherhood does not. Having the ability to be hands-free and dictate emails goes a long way when the bottle needs warming or your baby wants to sit in your lap for some snuggle time. With dictation, I can be responsive, productive, organized, and efficient without needing to sit at a desk all day. I’ve found that my Apple Watch has been indispensable in this regard. Having a hands-free way to keep up with messages when you’re with your baby goes a long way toward eliminating distractions for when your baby is being taken care of and you can sit down and pound out your work. Maybe the American Dream isn't as out of reach in 2026 as many fear. A key element of working and being a mom is helping yourself find ways to not let things pile up. As a general rule, if you maximize the efficiency of each moment, you chip away at the little things that would otherwise be overwhelming to deal with at the end of the day when your baby’s asleep and you need to recharge. It's crucial that Americans find new ways to use technology that benefit families rather than hinder them. As Pope Leo XIV wrote in the first encyclical of his papacy: “Technology is never neutral, because it takes on the characteristics of those who devise, finance, regulate, and use it.” Big Tech has made it possible for me to pursue both a career and motherhood, something that would have been far more difficult, if not impossible, only a decade ago. Maybe the American Dream isn't as out of reach in 2026 as many fear.
