How To Style A 4th of July Outfit That Isn’t Cheesy

Want to look patriotic without being mistaken for a bomb pop? You can certainly “look like the Fourth of July” (as Jennifer Coolidge would put it) while maintaining your chic, effortless sense of style.

If the images on Instagram or Pinterest of “4th of July outfits” are burning your eyes (or, at the very least, making you cringe), you’re in the right place. Here we’re breaking down how you can build an outfit for the Fourth of July that isn’t cheesy.

Let’s start with the items already in your closet. See any gingham? Denim? White or traditional blue will work. Got any dainty floral prints in a blue or red color? What about stripes? See, you don’t need to run to the latest superstore or wait with baited breath on Jeff Bezos to get yourself a giant “USA” tee to participate in the festivities of Fourth of July weekend. Chances are, you’ve got plenty of viable options hanging right in front of you, waiting to be worn.

Decide on the focal point of your outfit - this can be either a pattern (gingham, stripes, or florals) or a color (blue is the easiest to work with here). Then, keep it simple from there. Generally, white is the safest and most timeless option for a summertime addition to any outfit. Need shoes to go with your blue dress? White. A skirt to pair with your floral top? White.

Also, you don't need to pull together an outfit that has all the components – red, white, blue, stripes, stars, a Coors Lite, and a cowboy hat. We’re not walking American flags, ok?

Now, if you need some visuals to get you started, let’s break it down by what you’ll be doing.
