To get the real scoop, we sat down with Francesca Cairns, a UK-based professional stylist and certified color analyst who works with women worldwide through her image consulting services and shares tips on Instagram at @styledbyfrancescacairns. She explains why knowing your colors can save you money, make you look instantly more polished, and help you show up with confidence.

How did you first discover seasonal colour analysis, and what drew you to it?

I first discovered seasonal colour analysis when I trained as a stylist. Once I stumbled into the world of colour analysis, everything clicked. Suddenly, I could see why certain colours made me look tired while others lit up my whole face. What drew me in was how immediate and empowering the transformation felt; it wasn’t about trends, it was about alignment.

Did you have your own “aha moment” when you saw the difference these tools made for you personally?

I remember trying on a dress in my exact season and it was like watching the colour of my skin change—brighter eyes, smoother skin, more confidence. That moment really solidified how powerful this knowledge can be.

What’s the biggest transformation you’ve had in your own look since learning this?

Definitely letting go of all the black in my wardrobe! Once I embraced my palette, my style became more cohesive, and I noticed people started complimenting me, not just my outfit. That was a massive mindset shift.

What do most women get wrong about their own style, and how does that keep them from looking their best?

Most women focus on the clothes, the cut, the trend, the label—without considering if the colour supports their natural features. A beautiful dress in the wrong shade can still drain you, while even a simple shirt in the right hue makes you look stunning. Colour is the foundation.

If you could give every woman just one thing to instantly make her look more striking, what would it be?

The right lipstick in her undertone. It’s the fastest, most affordable way to transform your face without touching anything else. When it’s right, your teeth look whiter, your skin more even, and your whole look more intentional.

The Transformation Process

If someone wanted to do a complete “level-up” using your expertise, what’s the ideal order: colors first, hair second, makeup? Or something else?

Always start with colour. Once you know your palette, everything else—makeup, hair, wardrobe becomes so much easier and more consistent.

What’s the most dramatic before-and-after you’ve seen once a client understood her colors and lines?

I had a client who thought she had to wear cool-toned black to be taken seriously at work. Once she embraced her warm Autumn palette and adjusted her styling, she not only looked younger and more radiant, but also felt more confident in herself, and actually landed a promotion shortly after.

If a woman can only change three small things in the next month to look hotter, what should they be?

  • Learn your undertone.

  • Replace your everyday top with one in your best neutrals or colours.

  • Adjust your blush or lipstick to match your palette; it can take years off instantly.

Seasonal Color Analysis

Why does knowing your seasonal color palette matter so much, and how can it make someone look more attractive?

Because it removes guesswork. When you wear colours that harmonise with your skin tone, eye colour, and natural contrast levels, you instantly look healthier, fresher, and more polished. It’s like turning on a light switch.

What are some “dead giveaway” signs that a woman is wearing the wrong colors?

Sallow or dull-looking skin, shadows under the eyes, a general sense of the clothes wearing her instead of the other way around. When the colours are wrong, you often feel the need to "fix" your face with more makeup—that’s a sign.

Which colors tend to be universally flattering if someone doesn’t know their season yet?

Soft teal, true navy, and a gentle rose pink tend to work well across many seasons because they sit close to the middle of warm vs. cool and soft vs. bright.

Which color combos instantly make each season look more expensive?

  • Spring: Cream + coral + gold

  • Summer: Dusty rose + dove grey + silver

  • Autumn: Camel + olive + rust

  • Winter: Black + icy pink + cobalt

What’s your trick for telling if a lipstick shade truly works for your undertone?

Look at your eyes and skin after applying—do your eyes brighten and your skin look more even? Or do you look like you need more concealer and mascara to make it work? When it’s right, everything clicks effortlessly.

Which celebrities do you think are the best “poster girls” for each season?

  • Spring: Margot Robbie

  • Summer: Sabrina Carpenter

  • Autumn: Zendaya

  • Winter: Kim Kardashian

Are there any celebrities who consistently dress outside their season, and how does it affect their look?

Yes, often actresses in Summer palettes are styled in warmer tones that dull them down. Angelina Jolie has recently been wearing a very warm hair colour and warmer outfits and she could benefit from going cooler and more towards soft summer.

Are there stars you’d say are particularly hard to pin down—women whose look sits right between two seasons?

Definitely! People with neutral undertones like Jennifer Aniston can sit between seasons. That’s why a personalised analysis matters more than an online quiz.

Do you think Hollywood stylists and makeup artists usually get seasonal analysis right, or do they often miss it?

They often miss it, especially when chasing trends or trying to make a statement. There’s a big difference between “on-trend” and “timelessly flattering.”

Face Shape & Makeup

How can understanding your face shape change your makeup game?

Because it helps you balance your features rather than hide them. The right blush placement, contour, and even brow shape can make your face look more symmetrical and expressive—it’s transformative.

What’s one small change in makeup technique that can make a woman look instantly fresher and more polished?

Swapping your bronzer or blush for one in your correct seasonal palette. It adds believable warmth or flush without looking artificial.

Hair Color & Style

How often do you see women sabotage their looks with the wrong hair color?

Too often. A hair colour that’s too ashy or too warm can completely clash with your undertone and throw everything off, even if the cut is great or the makeup is on point.

What’s your process for figuring out someone’s most flattering hair shade and length?

I start with their seasonal palette, natural hair depth, and skin undertone. Then I look at their face shape and lifestyle to recommend a tone, level, and texture that enhances their features and fits their personality.

What undertone test should every woman do before committing to a new hair color?

Hold fabric swatches (warm vs cool) near the face in natural light. If warm colours make your skin look sallow or red, and cool tones make you glow, that’s a clear indicator. The same rule applies in reverse.

Which hair mistakes age women the fastest?

Going too dark or too cool as they get older, especially if their natural colouring softens with age.

What’s the easiest seasonal “refresh” a woman can do for her wardrobe without starting over?

Swap out your most worn scarf, lipstick, and top with versions in your best accent colours. These sit close to the face, so the impact is immediate, and the rest of your wardrobe can catch up slowly.

How do you help someone adapt their season recommendations to a specific personal style (romantic, minimalist, boho, etc.)?

Your season isn’t a style box, it’s a toolbox. I help clients use their palette within their style aesthetic. A boho Autumn might wear ochre and terracotta in flowing textures, while a minimalist Winter might stick to crisp white, black, and cobalt.

Can women bend the “rules” of their palette for special occasions without losing the overall flattering effect?

Absolutely! It’s about strategic bending. If you wear a colour outside your palette, keep your makeup aligned with your undertone, and try to balance the outfit with a scarf, earrings, or lipstick in a harmonious shade.

Confidence & Mindset

Can looking your best change how people treat you?

Yes, because it changes how you show up. When you feel aligned and confident in your appearance, people respond to that energy. You command more respect, attention, and connection.

What do you say to women who feel like “leveling up” is vain?

I remind them that “leveling up” isn’t about vanity; it’s about self-respect and self-care. When you dress in colours that truly support your natural beauty, you’re not just improving your appearance, you’re boosting your confidence and how you feel in your own skin. It’s a form of kindness toward yourself, and that radiates outward. Feeling good about how you look helps you show up more authentically in every part of your life.

How can a woman keep her personal style authentic while still embracing what flatters her?

Your colour palette is a foundation, not a set of rules. The key is to use your best colours in ways that feel true to you, whether that’s bold prints, minimalist cuts, or boho layers. It’s about mixing your personality with your palette so your style feels like you amplified, not replaced. When your colours work for your undertone and your style reflects your spirit, you get that perfect blend of authenticity and flattering impact.

What’s the biggest psychological shift you see in women who finally dress for their colors?

It’s often a profound release from self-doubt. Many women tell me they finally stop feeling invisible or “off.” When they wear the right colours, they see themselves differently—as vibrant, approachable, and powerful. That external shift sparks an internal transformation where they start valuing themselves more, make bolder choices, and carry themselves with newfound ease.

Choosing the Right Expert

What’s the advantage of working with a real person over using an AI tool or app?

Apps and AI tools often get it wrong because they can’t truly determine your undertone or see the subtle nuances of your natural colouring. I’ve had to fix many analyses that were completely off because of this. Working with a real person means getting a tailored, accurate assessment based on live observation and professional experience—ensuring you get the colours that genuinely enhance you.

Have you ever had a client come to you after being misdiagnosed by a quiz or app? What happened?

Many times! One client came to me convinced she was a Winter because of an app result, but when I draped her in her Soft Autumn colours, everything shifted— her skin looked healthier, her eyes brighter, and her entire demeanor relaxed. After receiving my report, she had a clear roadmap and made positive changes. It’s why personalised analysis matters so much.
