The Rhode skincare founder recently debuted a unique lip combo on her TikTok account, and while it's a departure from her usual natural, nude lip, we have to admit, we're kind of obsessed. The best part? This look is super easy to recreate at home.

However, although absolutely gorgeous and a major ‘90s nostalgia-inducing moment, Hailey Bieber's brownie glazed lips have stirred up some mixed reactions online. Therefore, we're here to break down everything you need to know about brownie glazed lips, how to recreate the look in two easy steps, and how this innocent beauty experiment became such a controversial topic in a few short weeks.

What Are Brownie Glazed Lips?

Made popular by supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks, and Cindy Crawford, the brownie glazed lips is a ‘90s throwback trend that consists of lining your lips with a brown or brownish-mauve lip liner, blending it in, and topping it off with a clear or neutral gloss. The result is a brownish, glossy lip that looks like it's been glazed with brownie batter.

This trend, although huge a few decades ago, made its comeback when no other than Hailey Bieber sported the lip look in one of her TikTok videos and gave it the catchy name.

However, this caused many influencers and professionals in the industry, including Beyoncé's makeup artist, Sir John, to express their dissatisfaction with the rebrand. Addressing the issue through several outlets, including Glamour, the makeup artist and creative director of L’Oréal wasn't too pleased with Hailey trying to coin and capitalize on a trend that was largely started by black women, without giving credit or making an effort to mention a little bit about the history of the look.

“Back then, all you had was a lip liner and a clear gloss. We had to be creative and try things in an unorthodox way because of the lack of products for black and brown people,” Sir John said.

"Now that people are referring to Hailey's brownie glazed lips as a ‘new’ trend, it's uncomfortable to watch," he continued, explaining, “everyone feels like they found gold for the first time. That's why we need to look and say ‘hey, we've been here.'” He added, “We've always known to give a nod to where it came from. That was what gave it swag.”

Following Sir John's statement, many other creators expressed their opinions on the matter, and while Hailey hasn't personally responded to the controversy, it's safe to assume that decades-old trends will continue to find their way to new communities through the likes of TikTok, and since context is often lost, people may ultimately claim things as their own, in which case, it becomes the responsibility of those with a platform to give credit when needed.

How To Get Brownie Glazed Lips

No matter the name or origin, the brownie glazed lip is definitely a look that we will be seeing a lot of this fall. And if you're wondering how to achieve it, we've got you covered.

In her original TikTok, Hailey Bieber showcased the result of a beautiful, glossy, brown lip that was created using a brown mauve lip liner and clear gloss. The model even revealed the exact products she used to create this silky lip look, which is something she doesn’t do all that often, considering beauty influencers had to scrape for answers on what her go-to nude lip combo is for a long time before someone figured it out.

Wearing a leather jacket, stylish chunky earrings, and sporting her signature model-off-duty bun, Hailey began by applying the Scott Barnes Lip Liner in the shade “Naomi” to the outer lines of her lips, as well as adding a small line in the middle of both her upper and bottom lips. Taking her finger, she then blended the color before finishing off her look with the Peptide Lip Treatment from her skincare brand, Rhode. And that's literally all it takes to get her brownie glazed lip!

Now, if you want to change things up a little, or if rich browns don’t necessarily compliment your skin tone, you can also use a mauve or any other color with a pinkish undertone and work with what you have to create a look that looks best on you.

A good option for this is Juvia's Place Lux Lip Liner in the shade “Kola,” a beautiful mauve shade that will give you a similar effect to Hailey’s brownie lip and works better for lighter skin tones.

Additionally, glosses don’t always have to be clear, and many icons from the ‘90s actually sported their “brownie glazed lips” with a pinkish or coral gloss or even a simple, nourishing lip balm that provides both lip care and a subtle shine. Two excellent options for this are the e.l.f. Cosmetics Hydrating Core Lip Shine, a lip balm that comes in eight different shades to compliment all skin types, and the Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25, a clear and nourishing lip balm that also provides broad-spectrum sun protection.

Finally, if you want to create a brownie glazed lip on a budget, some options to consider include the NYX Slide On Lip Pencil in the shades “Intimidate” and “Urban Cafe,” both beautiful and rich brown colors that you can top off with the Essence Extreme Shine Volume Lipgloss.

Closing Thoughts

The beauty industry is no stranger to controversies, and this might be just another one in the line. What are your thoughts on the backlash Hailey has been receiving? Do you think her brownie glazed lips can be considered cultural appropriation? Or are they simply a trend that's being re-popularized without any malice? And most importantly, will you be trying the brownie glazed lip trend? Let us know in the comments below!
