Over the last two decades, pop Colombian sensation Shakira has sold 2.7 million tickets to her concerts. She's been releasing hit after hit and is known for her beauty and performance skills. She and ex-boyfriend, soccer player Gerard Piqué, announced their split in June 2022. They share two children together, Milan and Sasha. They first met in 2010 and made their red carpet debut in 2012, but never got married. In an interview with "60 Minutes" in 2020, Shakira admitted that marriage "scares the sh*t" out of her, and she would rather have Gerard see her as his girlfriend than as his wife. But two years later, Shakira announced that she and Gerard were separating. It turned out their relationship didn't end so well.

Gerard Piqué Reveals He Allegedly Cheated on Shakira Because He Was Doing "What He Wanted" and Remaining True to Himself

In a 2022 interview, Shakira revealed that her breakup from Gerard was one of the "darkest hours of my life." She said it was extremely difficult to navigate the situation with their two sons. "I try to do it and to protect them, because that's my number one mission in life," she said. "But then they hear things in school from their friends or they come across some disagreeable, unpleasant news online, and it just affects them, you know?" As much as she wishes it was all a bad dream, it's very real and incredibly difficult for her family.

The next month, Shakira released a new single called "Monotonía" with Puerto Rican star Ozana. There was some speculation that the lyrics were about Gerard: "Suddenly you were no longer the same / You left me because of your narcissism / You forgot what we were one day."

In January 2023, Shakira released yet another song, this time with Argentine musician Bizarrap, entitled "BZRP Music Session #53." One of the lyrics seemingly referred to a younger woman that Gerard was just linked to: "I wish you good luck with my supposed replacement / I don't even know what happened to you / You are so strange that I can't even distinguish you / I'm worth two 22-year-olds / You traded in a Ferrari for a Twingo / You traded in a Rolex for a Casio." Around that time, Gerard's new relationship with 23-year-old Clara Chia Marti was starting to go public, and there was strong speculation that he cheated on Shakira with her.

Allegedly, Shakira found out about Gerard's affair because she came home to see that there was jam missing in the fridge—and Gerard doesn't like to eat jam. In the music video for "Te Felicito" with Rauw Alejandro, Shakira opens the fridge and finds Alejandro's head on a plate, perhaps referring to this detail that revealed Gerard's supposed infidelity.

Shakira, 46, has spoken out in some interviews that she has lost her belief in the fairytale of love. "I too believed that story, that a women needed a man to complete herself," she said. "I also had that dream to have a family where the kids had their mom and dad under the same roof. Not all of those dreams come true, but life has a way of compensating you in one way or another."

Gerard, 36, had remained silent during this time period, except for one photo he shared on Instagram with Clara confirming their relationship. There was no caption, just a selfie of the two of them leaning into each other.

Gerard recently spoke out for the first time about his breakup with Shakira. In an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais, he said that he was just doing what he thought was best for himself. “The day I die, I will look behind me, and I hope to have done everything I wanted," he said. “I want to be true to myself. I’m not going to spend money on cleaning up my image. The people I worry about and love are the ones that know me. I don’t care about the rest. I channel my energy into being with my people and giving them what I have. I am very happy. There have been changes in my life, and I have known how to maintain my happiness.”

He also said that he has a responsibility to "try to do the best" for his kids. "It's about protecting them. That's the work of all parents with their children," he added. "That's what I"m focused on, and that's my job as a father."

He is fully aware of the backlash that has come from their split—and his alleged infidelity. But he is keeping his head down and drowning out the noise, even if he is bombarded with hate every day on the internet.
