George Floyd's Family Accepted $2 Million Donation From Kanye West In 2020 But Is Now Suing Him For $250 Million

Kanye West was recently a guest on the podcast Drink Champs, where he made some inflammatory comments that resulted in the episode being wiped from YouTube. He made some statements about George Floyd and the nature of his death, and as a result, Floyd's family is suing him for $250 million, despite the fact that they gladly accepted $2 million of Kanye's donations in 2020.

Kanye West upset many people when he wore a "white lives matter" t-shirt in Paris a few weeks ago, and again when he attended the premiere of The Greatest Lie Ever Sold, Candace Owens' documentary about George Floyd and the rise of Black Lives Matter. He shared some of the things he learned from the film on Drink Champs, and that's when Floyd's family decided to sue the billionaire rapper, even though he donated millions of dollars to the family two years ago in the wake of Floyd's death.

In The Greatest Lie Ever Sold, Candace shared some inconvenient truths that she discovered after digging into the George Floyd case and his unfortunate death. For one, Floyd had a lethal amount of fentanyl in his system, enough to kill a horse. Inside the police car where Floyd was being held, there were multiple fentanyl pills that were partially chewed up, indicating that Floyd very likely ingested the remaining fentanyl pills upon arrest in order to avoid being charged with possession.

In the podcast interview, Kanye pointed out that the amount of fentanyl found in his system was deadly, suggesting that Floyd died not from being suffocated from a knee on his neck, but rather from a drug overdose. Additionally, he pointed out that Derek Chauvin didn't actually have his knee on Floyd's neck, but rather his upper shoulder (as can be seen in other angles of videos taken on that day). However, Floyd's family were displeased with Kanye's comments and are now taking legal action.

Roxie Washington, the mother of Floyd's only daughter, is filing a lawsuit against Kanye, his business partners, and business associates for "harassment, misappropriation, defamation and infliction of emotional distress." She is "seeking $250 million dollars in damages," according to a statement from her attorneys.

The lawyers have issued a cease-and-desist letter to Kanye after hearing his comments and attorney Pat D. Dixon III said, "Kanye's comments are a repugnant attempt to discount George Floyd's life and to profit from his inhumane death. We will hold Mr. West accountable for his flagrant remarks against Mr. Floyd's legacy."

Another attorney on the case, Kay Harper Williams, added that free speech rights don't include "harassment, lies, misrepresentation, and the misappropriation of George Floyd's legacy." She says that "some words have consequences" and they expected Kanye to learn this lesson.

However, Kanye donated $2 million to Floyd's family in 2020 and also paid for his daughter's college tuition. This is a fact that Floyd's ex-girlfriend seems to conveniently forget. While Kanye's comments may have been upsetting to some, an expert who was interviewed by Owens in her documentary confirmed that he did indeed have a "toxic, lethal" amount of fentanyl in his system.

In The Greatest Lie Ever Sold, Owens interviewed Floyd's roommates at the home where they lived for six years. They both said that not a single one of Floyd's family members showed up to gather his belongings, take care of his possessions, or even claim his car that was left behind in their driveway. But they had plenty of time to give multiple interviews in the press about their grief over Floyd's death.
