The Fall Capsule Wardrobe That Actually Gets Worn

For most of my twenties, my fall wardrobe was whatever I grabbed the first weekend it dipped below 60. They were cute pieces... most of them, at least. The problem was they had nothing to do with each other, so I owned a lot and wore very little. That's the whole argument for a capsule. Stylists have been preaching it since Donna Karan's Seven Easy Pieces in 1985, and the logic hasn't changed: a tight edit of clothes that all work together gives you more outfits than a stuffed closet of one-offs ever will. Fewer pieces, more combinations, less standing in front of the closet at 7:40 a.m. frustrated and running late. Every piece has to earn its spot by going with at least three others, so nothing sits on a hanger waiting for the one occasion it was bought for. Mine is 33 pieces in autumn shades. Most of it will still be in rotation next October. A couple of trend-report items made the cut, mostly suede, because I wanted them and they pass the three-outfit test. You'll probably wear it more than anything else on this list, so find one that fits and buy it in multiples. Personally, I swear by my Splendid tees. They're unbelievably soft, the perfect shade of white, and wash really well. I'm also a firm believer that you need one "fun" sweater in your capsule to keep things from feeling too plain. This one is my current favorite.
