Mendes (50) and Gosling (43) have always been very private about their relationship. The pair met back in 2012 when they made the movie, The Place Beyond the Pines. “I’ve never experienced anything like that," Mendes said of working with her Gosling. "The way he works, his commitment to his craft, how he wants to make everything as best as it can be—and that means making his costars as best as they can be."

"Unfortunately—or fortunately—there's only one Ryan, so I pretty much stopped acting after that," she added. Gosling was equally as enamored by Mendes.

"There were moments on The Place Beyond the Pines where we were pretending to be a family, and I didn’t really want it to be pretend anymore," he shared later. "I realized that this would be a life I would be really lucky to have.”

They began dating shortly after and welcomed their first child, Esmeralda Amada, in September 2014, and then added Amada Lee to the family in 2016. Gosling has continued to act, but Mendes took a step back, and recently shared why.

"It was like a no-brainer. I'm so lucky, and I was like, if I could have this time with my children—and I still work, I just didn't act, because acting takes you on location," she said. "It takes you away." . "It was almost just like a non-verbal agreement that it was like, 'Okay, he's going to work and I'm going to work. I'm just going to work here."

Her confidence in her decision shines through, as well as her unwavering support for Gosling. She recently shared a video thanking Mark Ronson for encouraging Gosling to make more music.

"So grateful to @iammarkronsonfor getting my man to make more music," she wrote on Instagram. "Dead Man’s Bones is my favorite band ….when I first heard Ryan sing, MY HEART EXPLODED. More Ryan & Ronson musica por favor."

Fans got another endearing peek at their family-centered lives when Mendes shared a post about the recent 96th Oscars ceremony. Gosling performed a memorable live version of "I'm Just Ken" during the show, and Mendes shared a post on Instagram that read: "You took Ken all the way to the Oscar’s, RG. Now come home, we need to put the kids to bed. 💋”

"That's what it's about—you go, you do your job the best you can, and then you come home," Mendes added during the interview when asked about the Oscars night post.

Gosling shared in a separate interview that whenever he doubts himself when it comes to fatherhood, he goes to Eva.

"I just lean on Eva. She knows what’s important, always. She just somehow knows. So if ever I’m in my head about it, I just ask her."

Closing Thoughts

While many Hollywood types are insistent that people, and especially women, shouldn't make sacrifices when it comes to their careers, Mendes serves as a lovely example of someone who saw spending time with her young children as absolutely worth it.
