Disney has taken beloved classics like The Little Mermaid and Snow White and transformed them into altered live-action films that fit certain ideologies. Whether or not you’re tired of them, Disney won’t stop with the remakes anytime soon. According to Disney insiders – The Disinder on YouTube – more of these controversial live-action films are on the horizon.

The insider's video states that CEO Bob Iger has reportedly scrapped the live-action version of Hunchback of Notre Dame. The film doesn't seem to be on Disney's list of priorities, but "don't fret," says Derek Cornell of The Disinsider, because the House of Mouse is still working on numerous remakes, including Lilo and Stitch, Moana, Hercules, Aristocrats, Bambi, and The Princess and the Frog.

"All the live-action remakes have grossed over $6.5 billion," Cornell explains. "You heard that right, billion dollars at the worldwide box office for Disney." It's also worth noting that a box office analyst previously estimated this year that Walt Disney Co. lost over $890 million on their last studio releases, which include Lightyear, Thor: Love and Thunder, Strange World, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, The Little Mermaid, and Elemental.

WorldOfReel reports that these movies cost nearly $3 billion to make, but they only raked in $1.86 billion. Marketing costs might've been more than $890 million in losses. Not all the movies I just listed are adaptations, but four are sequels or spin-offs.

The loss of revenue could be due to Disney's tendency to milk existing stories and, of course, its habit of changing classic stories into modern takes. Snow White's story is loved because of its romantic tale and enchanting world of animals and dwarves. Recently, teasers of the upcoming remake of the animated film ignited controversy for wandering away from the original story. A prince will no longer save the princess; six average-height "dwarves" and one token little person will support her. Doesn't sound like Snow White to me. "She's not gonna be saved by the prince, and she's not going to be dreaming about true love," Rachel Zegler – who will play the role of Snow White – explains.

“She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be. The leader that her late father told her that she could be if she was fearless, brave, and true," Rachel added. “And so it’s just a really incredible story for, I think, young people everywhere to see themselves in." It's 2023. You don't need to abandon your career for love or vice versa.

Disney's remakes are supposed to stir nostalgia in its audience, but there's a growing sentiment that audiences are yearning for fresh stories. This idea is further proven when looking at recent cinematic hits like Oppenheimer and Barbie, which both created such hype that their debut day earned the title “Barbenheimer.” These stories – Oppie inspired by real events, Barbie based on girls’ imaginations – were major blockbusters, revealing the population’s desire for new plots.
