I love cold weather and cozy vibes as much as the next gal, but I have to confess, whenever autumn and winter roll around I always feel disappointed while I stow away my sandals and sun hats.
I’ve always been a fashion-over-function type of person, and cold weather seems like the exact antithesis of that. Most of the time it feels hard to look cute when you’re freezing.
But the good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. In the past, I’ve overbought and over thought my fall and winter clothing choices so much I always got overwhelmed and ended up choosing things that didn’t necessarily fit out of desperation. This year, though, I opted for a capsule wardrobe approach — investing in just a few pieces that can be dressed up or down, and changing them out with accessories and jewelry. My closet (and my bank account) have both agreed that this is the way to go, and I’m a big fan.
Without further ado, here are my eight fall and winter can’t-live-withouts.
A Versatile Fall Dress
I’ve always loved wearing dresses more than pants, and a flirty, comfortable dress with a flattering cut definitely fits the bill.
Whether you pair it with casual sneakers or tall boots, it looks adorable either way. (Loft, $70)
Skinny Black Pants
I might be the only woman on earth who hated the skinny jean trend. To me, a tight fit was never flattering to me (or my thighs), and I was only too happy when it died out. But, I do miss the feel of a good, fitted pair of leggings when trying to look more put together.
These pants are the best of both worlds. They’re sleek and elegant, but actually warm enough for colder days. They’re not so tight they strangle my aforementioned thighs, but they’re nicely tapered in a really flattering way. And they’re not jeans or leggings, making them a great go-to for work, errands, casual or formal outings, etc. (Express, $80)
A Blanket Scarf
I love scarves. I love blankets. Enter: the best invention ever.
While I love accessorizing with something cute and noticeable, I love that these are warm and eye-catching at the same time. It’s a blanket, it’s a scarf, it’s both...what could be better? (Target, $17)
Boots are probably my favorite aspect of winter wardrobes, and I’m always on the lookout for a cute but unique addition to my collection. I’m also very picky and somewhat choosy about my boots.
But I bought these at the beginning of the season and have basically worn nothing else. They’re a Chelsea boot, but a pair with that kick-butt, no nonsense, notice-me attitude. They’re also SO comfortable (like unbelievably comfortable), and I’ve worn them out to dinner, mountain getaways, church, even shopping. They look great with pants or a dress, and are an all-around amazing pair of shoes. (Steve Madden, $100)
A Black Turtleneck
I know what you’re thinking: Rachel Green called and wants her closet back.
But seriously, why don’t we talk about turtlenecks enough? I surprised even myself when I bought a really nice black one and realized both how flattering and warm it was for colder days.
Pair it with your ugly sweaters, your jeans, or your leggings. ‘90s fashion is making a comeback, and I for one will be ready with my armful of turtlenecks. (Loft, $35)
A Down Jacket
This winter, I finally invested in a good winter jacket, and I’ve never been happier (or warmer). I purchased this one, and I’m amazed at how warm and lightweight it is at the same time. I wear it when going for walks, working, running errands, to a date night, or pretty much anywhere. It’s also super flattering, and it has four pockets (four!) for all the essentials when you need to run out in a flash sans purse. (Patagonia, $159)
Camel Long Jacket
Honestly, a camel long jacket is the ultimate winter wardrobe staple. Pair it with jeans for a dressed-down look, or over your sparkling holiday dress on your way to the New Year's Eve party. It's the perfect way to channel NYC style. (Uniqlo, $150)
Even in warm weather, I’m a hat girl. When it comes to cold weather, I’m in my element. I love a snug beanie, and one that’s both comfy and warm is what I need in my life. These come in TONS of colors and prints, and even have matching gloves when you need to look matchy matchy. (CC Beanie, $15)
