Armie Hammer Checks Into Treatment Program After Cannibalism Scandal
Armie Hammer has left the Grand Caymans and checked into a Florida treatment facility.

A witness recorded Armie Hammer’s departure from the Grand Cayman airport on Saturday, May 29. The actor said goodbye to his estranged wife Elizabeth Chambers and their two children. The witness wrote on social media, “Elizabeth and kids dropp[ed] him off and walk[ed] in as far as allowed. A lot of hugs and seemed emotional.”
Hammer checked into an in-patient facility for drug, alcohol, and sex issues outside Orlando, FL on Monday, May 31. Hammer had reached out to his estranged wife in late May, “asking for help and telling her that he was ready to seek treatment” and “pledging to stay” at the facility “as long as it takes to get healthy.”
A close friend of Hammer’s told Vanity Fair, “Everyone looks at Armie thinking that he’s had some sort of privileged life—and that must mean there were no problems in his youth and everything was peachy keen. But that’s not necessarily the way things go. Just because you come from an upbringing where financial resources are plentiful doesn’t mean life isn’t without problems.”
The friend added, “This is a clear sign that he is taking back control [of] his life and knows that this [is] a step towards his overall well being.”
Back in March, Vanity Fair covered the generational trauma in the Hammer family: money, corruption, drugs, infidelity, and more. And multiple sources have described Armie Hammer’s own “unresolved trauma” and “ongoing substance abuse.”
“He’s like a tank or something,” a friend said. “He’s six feet five so he can literally drink a bottle of vodka and not feel it. His tolerance is crazy high for everything—I mean, he can eat five Big Macs and not feel sick. He drinks a lot and he smokes weed…I mean, there’s no drug he won’t do.”
A former girlfriend said, “He’s addicted to drugs because he has so much trauma that he cannot deal with stillness, face himself, or sit alone with his shit. Everything he’s doing he has essentially said out loud in a tweet or an interview. He’s not that secretive. He’s been about to explode for so long, but everyone laughs it off.”
Hammer’s current bad situation was also contributed to by allegations of cannibalism, emotional abuse, and sexual violence in January 2021. Following these allegations, he dropped out of two high-profile projects, and his wife of 10 years filed for divorce in July (what Hammer later called a “seriously seismic event.”)
