If you haven't followed the trial of Elizabeth Holmes, who was recently found guilty on one count of conspiracy to defraud investors and three wire fraud counts, the new Hulu series The Dropout is your chance to catch up on the drama. The show airs on March 3.
Holmes dropped out of Stanford University in 2003 to start a company called Theranos, which was supposed to create a technology that only required a finger prick of blood for analysis. Her company raised $900 million from investors, but they were never able to deliver the product that Holmes claimed they could. She became the youngest and wealthiest self-made female billionaire in 2015, but now she faces a $250,000 fine and up to 20 years in prison.
Amanda Seyfried Is Cast Perfectly as Elizabeth Holmes
In The Dropout trailer, it's clear that Amanda has studied Elizabeth Holmes extensively. In addition to the incredible costume design (her hair looks exactly like Holmes'), Amanda has nailed the entrepreneur's mannerisms and way of speaking.
SNL's Kate McKinnon was originally slated to play the lead role in this series, but she pulled out for unknown reasons. Photos of Amanda as Elizabeth Holmes were first released in December 2021, and ever since we've been convinced that she is made for this role. The Dropout's cast also includes William H. Macy, Naveen Andrews, and Alan Ruck.
The story of Elizabeth Holmes is so popular that Adam McKay and Jennifer Lawrence are also working on a movie about the rise and fall of Theranos. Jennifer is known to bring all sorts of characters to life so we're looking forward to seeing how she will portray Holmes.
