Nikki DeRoest, Los Angeles-based makeup artist for stars such as Rosie Huntington and Hailey Bieber, forecasts that 2020 will be a year of a softened palette, with a paring down of harsh lines so-to-speak. The looks we will see are going to have a traditional feminine appeal, with dewy lips, glowing skin, and feathered brows.

The looks we will see are going to have a traditional feminine appeal, with dewy lips, glowing skin, and feathered brows.

Here’s a rundown of the most in-demand tricks and the must-have products to add to your beauty box this year!

1. Nude, Glossy Lips

Dewy, flushed lips with barely-there color are taking the place of over-lined, matte lips. DeRoest explains, “The shade vibe is going to be all about sheer nudes and earth tones. And the finish is going to be almost glossy, not sticky or shellacked, with a barely-there balm shine as opposed to matte."

Lipsticks:
For lighter complexions, Rosie Huntington models this perfectly full, natural lip. Try Charlotte Tillbury’s Matte Revolution Lipstick in Very Victoria (a rich taupe) or Pillow Talk (a nude pink). For darker complexions, try Fashion Fair Lipstick in Lace (deep berry and chocolate tones).

Glosses:
A hydrating, emollient matte lipgloss is an essential for that desired “born this way” look. With a variety of shades to choose from, Armani’s Beauty Lip Maestro Liquid Lipstick delivers intense moisture and color. We recommend a nude or pinkish hue from this Allure Editor’s top beauty pick.

2. Pre-Highlight

DeRoest’s favorite technique to take with you into the new decade is pre-highlighting. Many makeup routines require applying moisturizers and skin-brighteners prior to foundation application, but DeRoest takes it one step farther by prepping the skin with highlighter that peeks through foundation, concealer, and setting powder. “The single technique that makes skin look naturally radiant, both in person and through an iPhone camera, is implementing the pre-highlight. I’ll rub liquid highlighter all over the cheekbones, up on the forehead, down the nose, and a little bit on the chin,” explains DeRoest.

Try It:
DeRoest recommends Chantecaille Lumiere Highlighter or By Terry’s Brightening CC Serum, which both illuminates and coats the skin with light-reflecting pigments.

3. Water-Tint Foundation

The goal of skin in 2020 is to look like skin. DeRoest suggests a sheer, water-based foundation as a base. She states,"It's not a ton of coverage, but it evens the skin and adds a little glow, so the skin looks like there's nothing over it." The makeup maestros recommend starting with a water-tint foundation and adding more coverage if necessary for problem spots.

Try It:
For a dewy, hydrating finish try Surratt’s Dew Drop Foundation for a light to medium coverage or Chanel’s Les Beiges Fresh-Water Tint with a micro-pigmented formula.

4. Glitter Eyeshadow

Shimmering and iridescent lids will be seen all over town this year. Romantic hues such as lavender and rose will grace every makeup artist’s palette this year, so we suggest non-chalky tones from brands that offer major bang for their buck.

Try It:
Glossier Lidstar’s Glistening Eyeglow offers a sheer glow of color that stays on all day (no creasing for you, sister, and no need for primer!). Another option is Glam Attack Liquid Shimmer Powder by Haus Labs in Champagne. This liquid-to-powder formula provides a weightless, buildable feel for an all-day creaseless wear.

5. Bold Feathery Brows

Flashback to the ‘80s and early ‘90s alert! Big, bushy, and fierce brows are making a comeback in 2020. DeRoest shows a brushed-up and defined look in her Instagram tutorial. DeRoest’s advice is as follows: “First, look at the shade of your brow hair. That should be the first guide in choosing your pencil. If your brow hair is dark and you want to fill in but soften your brows, go a shade lighter. If you are trying to define your brows, go with the shade closest to your hair color. If you are trying to deepen your brows, go with one shade darker.”

Try It:
For those with sparse brows, try using Roen’s Beauty vowBROW Pencil to fill, define, and shape your brows.

Closing Thoughts

There you have it! The in-demand beauty trends of 2020 are decidedly ethereal and softer, with looks any skin will fit in - it’s just a matter of finding your perfect hue and product!
