11 Signs Men See You As "Wife Material"

A lot of women have decided that being called "wife material" is an insult. The argument makes some sense. It can come across as a verdict from a man nobody asked. But when a man treats you with that slightly old-fashioned kind of respect, he's handing you one of the better compliments you'll ever get, whether or not you're in the market. Older Men Try To Set You Up With Their Sons An older man who pulls out his phone to show you a photo of his son is rarely just bragging. A 22-year-old deli worker on Reddit described a regular doing exactly that with pictures of his two adult sons, explaining that he "said that he is trying to help his sons out." It happens anywhere you're kind and visible, and there's a reason the parents are the ones doing the scouting. Women on r/AskWomen described the pattern, and one of them said she was "told I'm wife material because I'm feminine and sweet mannered and not a party girl." Others in the thread said the men who told them this then declined to date them, which they found less flattering. Men admit as much. "Men have 2 sets of standards for women," one wrote on r/AskMen , "a very low standard for who they will sleep with and a high standard for commitment." Being passed over by the wrong men saves you a lot of time, even when it doesn't feel that way. 5. Men Ask What You're Bringing The office potluck gets announced and the guy two desks over asks whether you're making the thing you made last time. At the cookout, the men keep finding reasons to drift toward the kitchen while you plate. Men who have eaten your cooking once tend to bring it up for years. Men are responding to a woman who makes a home feel good and enjoys taking care of people, and that doesn't require a resignation letter. One dish you can make without a recipe and a batch of something baked for the office go a long way. 6. Men Notice You're Good With Kids In our piece where we asked guy friends what weird things they find attractive , one man admitted, "If she's really good with kids, that's a major draw for me... watching her being soft and fun with them is my kryptonite." So when your friend's husband watches you handle his screaming three-year-old at a cookout and goes a little quiet, he might be thinking of you for a buddy of his you haven't met yet. When men are happy to have you around their people, you've already proven you're easy to have around. Male students put physical attractiveness first, while mothers and fathers put "kind and understanding" at the top and left attractiveness far down the list. A man who wants you in a room with his mother already believes you'd pass her test, and her test is mostly about character. An invitation to a family cookout or a cousin's wedding works the same way. Garth Fletcher and colleagues, in 1999 research on what people want in an ideal partner, found that the qualities people care about sort into three factors: warmth and trustworthiness, vitality and attractiveness, and status and resources. Looks are on the list, and nobody's pretending otherwise (we've even covered the study confirming pretty people are more trustworthy ). But warmth and trustworthiness are a full third of what people are looking for, and that's the third men are talking about when they compliment who you are. None of this means you need to want marriage right now. Plenty of women reading this are happily single and will stay that way for a while. But "wife material" is better treated as information than as an insult. Men, in general, are telling you that you come across as kind and trustworthy and that people like having you around. If you're single, the men who notice these things are also the men worth noticing back, and if the guy holding the door and cleaning up his language happens to be single too, pay attention.
