Beauty trends come and go, but the new year is the perfect time to bid farewell to outdated looks that don't reflect our true beauty. Whether that's a habit of how we get ready, an unflattering hairstyle, a makeup look that doesn't accentuate our features in the right way, or a skincare product that's not doing our skin any favors, we all have something that needs to be left in the past.

Here are 10 beauty trends we need to leave behind and replace with something new in 2023:

1. Pillow Face

Pillow face is essentially the side effect of injecting too much filler into the cheeks and lips, resulting in a puffy, unbalanced look. We strongly believe the time for dermal fillers has come and gone, and the era of embracing a more natural look is finally at our doorstep. In the new year, forget the classic Kardashian-Jenner look and direct your beauty goals towards a naturally snatched look instead.

Replace with: A combination of skincare, nutrition, lifestyle, exercise, and techniques like gua sha to achieve a perfect glow and contour.

2. Skincare Products That Give an Instant Glow

If you've ever tried the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Serum or Magic Cream, you've probably noticed an instant glow after the application and thought this is everything you need for healthy, glowing skin. However, the issue with these products is that they don't actually contain ingredients that nourish your skin. Instead, they contain ingredients like mica or silica that reflect light, giving you an instant but artificial glow without providing any benefits for your skin.

Products like these give brands the excuse to jack up the price tag and market instant results when the result is actually due to a filler ingredient that doesn't contribute to making your skin healthier in any way. These ingredients are also found in most BB creams and foundations, so if you want to achieve that beautiful glow, you can do so with a light layer of makeup without having to splurge an extra $100 for a serum or a moisturizer that will give you the same (but not necessarily better) result.

Replace with: Skincare products containing active ingredients like peptides, ceramides, and antioxidants that nourish your skin from within and contribute to a beautiful, healthy glow in the long run.

3. Excessive False Eyelashes

Excessive false eyelashes not only look ridiculous on most people, but they can also be incredibly damaging to your natural lashes. Each refill and removal usually results in pulling and tugging on your natural lashes, which can weaken them over time and cause damage to the hair bulb, resulting in hair thinning and loss. Additionally, the glue used to keep false lashes on also attracts bacteria that can lead to infections and serious conditions such as styes and blepharitis.

Replace with: Lash-growth serums that contribute to healthy hair growth and enhance your natural lashes with a more voluminous, lengthier, and silkier result.

4. Laminated Eyebrows

Laminated eyebrows are a beauty trend that's sadly going strong in its second year, but it's a trend that we hope will go out of style soon. Laminated eyebrows look unnatural and plastic-like and don't complement anyone's face shape, no matter how hard we try to fit them into our beauty standards. Out of our lives (and for-you pages,) please!

Replace with: Natural eyebrows that complement your face shape filled in with a little bit of brow gel and a thin pencil.

5. Glittery Eyeshadow

Covering your eyelids with glitter was the it-thing to do during the past year, thanks to TV shows like Euphoria, but now it's time to move on. Glittery eyeshadows may look cute in photos and on stage, but putting them on your eyes on a regular day-to-day basis will only result in an uncomfortable and heavy look. Besides, don't forget that you put plastic on your face every time you apply glitter eyeshadow, which can be harsh and damaging to the delicate skin around the eyes.

Replace with: Cream eyeshadow in subtle tones of brown, gold, and bronze that will bring out the color of your eyes and add depth to your look without making it look heavy and out of place.

6. Unconventional Hair Colors

Many might feel strongly about leaving this trend behind, but the truth about unconventional hair colors like pink, purple, blue, and green is that they simply don't look good.

Fun and quirky is one thing, but if you're looking for something that will last, accentuate your beautiful features, and make you look more attractive, you should opt for natural hues that suit your skin tone. Additionally, rocking your best color for a long time will make you more confident because you know what looks good on you, and you don't easily fall for trends, which requires a great deal of self-awareness and maturity.

Replace with: Natural and timeless color that suits your skin tone and accentuates your beauty.

7. Excessive Use of Hot Styling Tools

We all want our hair to look perfect at all times, which is why many women reach for their hot styling tools whenever they see the slightest hint of hair out of place. But overusing these tools can cause more than just hair damage, so it's important to know when enough is enough.

For many, desperately seeking perfection in their physical appearance has become an obsession; therefore, in the new year, let's leave unhealthy habits around our looks behind and focus on nurturing our beauty from within. Not only will our hair thank us, but our self-confidence and inner peace will also skyrocket.

Replace with: Air-drying, heatless styling techniques, and accepting natural hair texture and its imperfections as part of your unique beauty.

8. Platinum Bleach Blonde

While on the subject of unconventional hair colors and fried strands, platinum bleach blonde is something we need to bid farewell to in 2023. This trend has been popular for quite a few years now, but let's admit once and for all that platinum blonde hair doesn't look great (unless you're Gwen Stefani), and, in most cases, it only serves to damage our tresses.

And since the new year should be all about gentle self-care, healthy grooming and beauty habits, and looking your best, it's time for the platinum bleach blonde look to make its exit.

Replace with: A more natural blonde option that complements your skin's undertone and gives you a healthier, shinier, and natural-looking outcome.

9. Trendy Hairstyles

There's nothing wrong with wanting to try a new hairstyle, but finding your signature coiffure will definitely make you feel more confident and look more put-together. Therefore, instead of constantly chasing after the latest trendy hairstyle, we should focus on finding a look that will always make us feel like ourselves and comfortable in our own skin.

Replace with: Classic and elegant cuts that flatter your face shape, complement your style, and will never go out of fashion.

10. Overconsumption

Overconsumption is definitely the highlight of the beauty trends we need to get rid of in the new year, as it has become a very serious issue affecting not only people's bank accounts but also their mental state. You don't have to have every serum, moisturizer, or the newest foundation that made a beauty influencer's skin glow in a 60-second TikTok video with a beauty filter on.

Let the new year be all about being conscious of our purchases and learning to work with and appreciate the products we already spent money on without needing to constantly buy more.

Replace with: A minimalistic skincare and makeup routine consisting of products that work for your skin type and address your skin concerns while giving you a natural, put-together look.

Closing Thoughts

Remember, trends come and go, and while wanting to experiment with something new isn't always a bad idea, it's also important to know when to stick to what looks great on you and makes you feel confident and beautiful.

In the new year, don't be too swayed by external influences; instead, focus on looking and feeling your best with a beauty routine that works for you. Let's make 2023 the year of self-love and beauty without the pressure of unrealistic standards and unhealthy habits.
